That gives me the impression at least, that the bearings are adjustable for wear, just like on normal bikes. Is that correct?

Not on the hubs I have taken apart, the RHS relies on the freehub/freewheel bearings. LHS has a press fit sealed bearing . The inner axle nut is there as a d/o spacer and to keep the seal in close contact to the bearing.

Interesting, I wonder why that is, though on both of my bikes, there was/is no play up to now at least! So I never ever looked!

Simple really for reliability any loose balls will seize and mash the internals.
