The error is of the OP. XYIL sell it as an electric unicycle.

I still think it's an expensive toy. It does work though. It took me about 15 minutes to learn to ride it, a bit like snowboarding but much easier to learn.
You can easily fall off it. Maximum speed is about 10mph.
No match for the Sedgways.

yes i meant that (the op), where did you get to try it? somehow i'd have to feel particularly confident before gliding past the locals in that way

I met a young guy about 35 in the park last summer - he was doing pirouettes with it. You can get to be quite good on it doing left and right turns after half an hour practice but it gets very scary when you want to stop. I just headed straight to the railings.

I remember the Japanese chimp on a Segway, I'm sure he would be better than me on this thing.

Seeing that is nearly a badly spelled Karaoke, perhaps you have to sing out of tune when perched on it!

Is it legal? I don't see how it can be and the cops put a stop to Segway riding when people started to use them on the roads and pavements too.

No, it's not legal since it doesn't comply with either possible law. On the road it would have to have viable pedals, and powered on the pavement it would have to be pedestrian controlled, which it clearly isn't. The question of whether someone on wheels can be a pedestrian in some circumstances has been clearly specified in a test case. They have to be walking alongside, even scooting doesn't comply.

Don't those rules only apply to vehicles intended to be used on the road, which this device isn't?

I covered that in my reference to use on the pavement.

Specifically for a powered vehicle to be used on the pavement it would have to comply with the pedestrian controlled vehicle regulation. The main two provisions are full control by the pedestrian in charge and a maximum powered speed of 4 mph in UK law. I daresay these provisions are what ruled out the Segways. There is equivalent EU law which has a 6 kph maximum speed.

The Post Office at one time had powered "barrows".
