Seriously Define server, define laptop... Define task, define whether it is computational intensive,I/O intensive, amenable to parallel numerical processing a la Graphics card CUDA ,
Alternativeky .. define your terms if if beating is the 100metres dash, the 25year old laptop wins hands down..,.. carrying a tower computer is slower than carrying a laptop.

I used my laptop as a VNC viewer with a free VNC server on the machines I needed to control, amazing what you can do with 192 Mo of RAM

.. but which CPU power, as i have said a CUDA programmed application using all the cores in a graphics card can outperform virtually any could. .. that is why those bitcoin miners covet them.cinebence test is for pure cpu power nothing else
it dont work like that as it goes on the hashrate it can do so the more of them that comes on line it makes the difficulty more harder thus less hashrate the longer it mines for.
so in 3 months it could be a door stop where as a gfx card can still be sold on and have a use.
the point is my cpus are ten years old and can be bought for 40 quid each so if you can get a socket 1366 mobo x58 and over clock it it wont be that far off what you can buy today for a lot more money.
sure it wont have usb 3 pcie 3 or nvme support and leds everywhere but it will be way cheaper than a new system just use more power.

if I need speed for my laptop, I would hook up an external GPU.well it can kick a 6k mac book pros ass and not thermal throttle lower than a 2017 one ill get me one of these.
it wont do jack for the cpus tho and there slower than the pcie slot as they use thunderbolt/usb c for the connection.
