Can i use a single sprocket on the front crank.

I'm going to try making a rear hub E-bike, I have the frame which is an old specialised hard rock. Can I use just a single front gear and is there a way I can keep the chain from coming off. I know there is something but can't recall the name of it.

There's these chain guards to help prevent the chain coming off.

but if you use a narrow-wide front chain ring you might not need it.

I know it's not the same but I changes my giant ebike from a 2x11 to a 1x11 using a narrow wide ring and it has never come off. The trick is getting one that is low enough for hill climbing but is still high enough to give your preferred top speed without over revving your legs.
