I've just come across this on ebay and I am a bit puzzled by what it is:

It seems to be a Panasonic Ebike motor and from what I can tell, it has the same mounting lugs as the Panasonic crank drive unit. But it doesn't look like any crank drive unit that I have seen before (no motor sprocket) and it only costs a fraction of the price that I would expect to pay for a new motor.

Could it be just a torque sensor to be used in combination with a hub motor?

Think it is a motor Tillson , went on that sites shop typed in front motor which gave two photos of it seem two many wires for it to be just a torque sensor. ( also tried panasonic tech centre using the part number but came up blank)

I'm going for a bottom bracket torque sensor, for a front hub motor.

With those lugs, it must be very model specific though.

"Tretlager" being bottom bracket?
The more that I look at it, the more I believe it to be a torque sensor for a hub motor. I don't know if it will match with any hub motor or if it has to be a Panasonic hub motor.

Those mounting lugs seem to match the pattern of the Panasonic crank drive motor, so I assume that it will fit onto any bike with a Panasonic crank motor. It also seems to use the inframe battery mount found on Kalkhoffs.

I suppose this could be an option for someone who owns a Kalkhoff with a broken crank motor. The could convert the bike to a hub motor with torque sensing.

Its the Panasonic crank drive motor from a few years ago (though still on a couple of new bikes around these days)
it has to fit in the specially designed frame used by a variety of manufacturers and as tillson says will probably only good for someone who needs a replacement for their existing one

It doesn't look like anything used by Derby Cycle e.g. Kalkhoff, Raleigh et al.
Has there ever been a Panasonic front hub motor, I don't think so and how would that power it:confused:
I'm wondering if it is the motor used in the electric Giant Revive as shown below although the wires to the battery connection plate look too shorto_O

Second thoughts could it be for this Panasonic folder?

It's the combined pedelec/torque sensor/control unit for some of the Panasonic front hub motors. There have been various versions of these since 2009 and one without regen was used by Germany's Derby Cycle gmbh brands Kalkhoff/Raleigh etc up into 2011/2. The introduction of these motors coincided with Panasonic taking over Sanyo who produced the old Berkestrand front hub motor which was used by Giant in the various Twist 1/2 and Express models from 2008.

These Panasonic made hub motors first had regen in Japan but not in the first Derby Cycle versions. Later they produced a full electrical front brake (no other front brake) plus regen version which had a trial batch of 3000 in Japan before a wider launch, but I don't think it ever made it onto the world's markets.

Of course the Raleigh brand front hub motor versions are now produced by the rival Accell group with a different make hub motor and for 2014 there's no Panasonic front hub motor Kalkhoff that I know of.

Here's a link about motor trends mentioning these in a pedelecs post I made five years ago and here's a photo of the Kalkhoff Agattu F model with the front hub motor and this sensing unit:

I stand corrected, but it's good to learn something new everyday:)

John, the link I added at the end of my post probably after you read it contains my question whether hub motors were about to be dominant. Clearly that soon reversed with a big swing back to crank drives by many makers, though now we are back to uncertainty with strong contenders including your own eZee ones and a couple of two speed hubs.

One day the industry might settle on what's best!
