Hi

Can any one help me with information on the Tongxin motors to suit a Brompton and a Pashley tricycle.

Is there a list any where of the different RPM motors available.
Am I correct that the different speed motors are the same motor with a different ratio drive. I need possibly a lower ratio than normal as we live in a very hilly are and would sacrifice top speed for hill climbing.

Can you still buy these motors direct from China?

Regards

Why the Tongxin, any particular reason? They are a bit fragile and not as powerful as the Bafang when partnered with a suitable controller...

Ian just search Tongxin there are loads of threads.

They are hard to get hold of. In the UK linked Electric Wheel Company are about the only people that would sell you a kit.

Broadley speaking you need a 260RPM for a Brompton 16" wheel 175RPM for a 700c wheel and a 190RPM for a 26" wheel.

PS Agree with NRG, in a smaller wheel they seem more reliable unless like Cytronex you ensure they are run in exactly the right environment. Of course their main benefit is quietness, good free wheel ability and stealth look.

Thanks for the replies. I like the free wheel ability on the Tongxin. Tried the original Tony Castles conversion at ATOB and was really impressed. The Electric Wheel Co price is outside my range. Does the Bafang run as freely as the Tongxin and will it fit Brompton forks?

Again search is your friend

Read here about fitting a Bafang in Brompton forks.

And no it won't run as freely/quietly or be lighter than a Tongxin. It is also wider than the slim 80mm Tongxin unit and will therefore require more spreading of the forks.

Though likely, the Bafang will be more reliable over time and will provide better assistance.

Thanks.

I have decided to go with the Bafang SWXU.

I am not clear on one thing. Are there different versions of the SWXU with either different windings or different gear ratios? I am after hill climbing ability rather than speed as it is for a rider with pedalling difficulties. The motor is to fit a Brompton.

BMS battery seem to have the best price but only state for 24" wheel.
