Are you sure the test showed 21.1 download speed Lynda? Also it should show Mb/s after the speed to show what it is.

The maximum possible speed on ordinary wired BT broadband is 8 mb/sec, so if you have 21.1 mb/s, you must have fibre optic of some kind.

Ive just done the test again flecc and its now showing Download 26.33 Mb/s and .968Mb/s but i definitely dont have Infinity or Virgin

I am getting download 16.9mb/s and upload 1.9mb/s and I am with virgin on a 30mb/s pkg. Your 26.33mb/s seems exceptionally good but upload in comparison seems low.

I dont pretend to understand it jazper but just as long as it works well thats fine by me

I think my whole package, line rental, broadband and all calls free 24/7 is about £30 a month, I never ever lose my connection and BT have always been helpful and efficient, although I know others havent found that, I can only speak as I find.

Its a bit like my vehicles, as long as they start and get me where I want to go I dont need to know how they do it, I leave that to the experts lol

Maybe BT changed u over to the fiber optic cable as a standard pkg. I myself try not too think to much about PC tech, as long as I can do what I need to do and if the pc starts to play up, I'll pull the plug and start again.

My main bugbear is bl**dy printers, Im on my 3rd in 4 years, they seem to be the only techie thing I have problems with.....I HATE them.....but unfortunately need one.....

Oh......and my kindle.....love it to bits, actually I seem to love it too much, Ive just broken my 2nd one in just over 2 years

Now I am wondering whether I can get away with reading books on my new phone instead....I am seriously considering the new Samsung Mega 6. Anyone got one ? Any reviews ?

You are definitely on fibre optic then Lynda. BT have had it for quite a while and it predates them using the Infinity name, but you do have the same as Infinity, just not the fancy marketing name.

Your down and upload speeds are nothing special for fibre optic but are more than sufficient for all normal use.

I've got Virgin media 60mb broadband and regularly get 25mbps on 'G' wifi and 37mbps on 'N' wifi, on a wired LAN its always closer to 60mbps. Wifi is not that efficient

I usually use speedtest.net for testing. We have four computers/tablets connected most of the time.

I'm with Plusnet fibre optic. I was quoted a download of 53Mbps but I in fact get 70Mbps + and 17-18Mbps upload. Well happy with customer care too

For those who wish to know their speed try the BBC BBC iPlayer - Check your connection speed
It does not give an upload speed though.

It will be interesting to check that one out in the middle of the wee small hours - when no other beggar is sharing my cell
I recently upgraded to a faster wireless link, but daytime and evening don't see much difference, as it's contention that's the limiter more than anything else.

That's very useful for getting the streaming speed which is much lower than the download speed, and gives the degree of usefulness for TV and radio.

6.62Mb/s - it's never been near that in the 6 years I've lived here, and I've checked it regularly. However, over the past 18 months the quoted download speed has been creeping up, which may be related to ongoing work to make our exchange the first in our (rural) area to be FO. Or else maybe they're using smaller electrons now ;o)

And have just now used the speedtest.net one and got

There is me thinking Virgin provided the fastest and best broadband. The figures above are something one can only dream of with virgin

Yes, that's the one I used The link is to the results of the test I did, which shows my ISP as BT. It's not a BT speedcheck. I've just run it again, and it's even higher,

but I think they quote the peak speed, whereas the the other quotes an average speed.
I think...

Understood peerjay. Most of these quote the peak speed, but as said, I got almost identical results on both that and the speedtest one, both giving the best speed recorded during the tests on my system.

I switched to Plusnet 76Mb fibre about 6 months ago and I am pleased to say it does what it says on the can, just clocked it at 71.6 Mb/s.

The only downside was when the switchover happened we only had the service for an hour followed by no landline or broadband for nearly 3 days due to BT Openreach sub contractors messing up the connection in the cabinet down the road.

That seems to be a widespread problem John, we've had it round here and a BT engineer friend is caustic about the sub-contractors BT use.

The builders of my estate used a sub-contractor to install all the phone lines, and they used random colours in the 600 line cables instead of sticking to the twisted pairs. The result was years of horrendous crosstalk and very noisy lines until it was all rewired over time.
