Coincidence. Don't read too much into this.A Complete Coincidence, No Connexionen, ja?
It's in the treaty, so it's normal that the EU may use that power.*Germany's* incoming ruling coalition is also advocating a tougher approach to countries that violate the rule of law in the EUSSR, including possibly removing their voting rights — a provision that appears aimed at Budapest.
JAWOHL HERR KOMMISAR
SO DEMOKRAZIC !?
old habits die hard, haha![]()
Still not DEMOKRAZIC , nein. It's in the treaty, so it's normal that the EU may use that power.
Nothing strange about that.
Just to refresh your memory:
The European Union can suspend the voting rights of a member state under Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU). This article is often referred to as the EU's "nuclear option" because it's the most serious political sanction available against a member state.
The circumstances:
Voting rights can be withdrawn when a member state seriously and persistently breaches the EU's fundamental values, which include:
- Respect for human dignity
- Freedom
- Democracy
- Equality
- The rule of law
- Respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities
These values are enshrined in Article 2 of the TEU.
Main reasons the EU is concerned about Hungary:
- Judicial Independence
- Reforms have been seen as undermining the independence of courts and judges.
- The EU argues that political control over the judiciary violates the rule of law, a cornerstone of the EU legal system.
- Media Freedom
- State influence over media and concentration of ownership have weakened press freedom.
- Independent journalism in Hungary has come under pressure, raising red flags about pluralism and freedom of expression.
- Corruption and Use of EU Funds
- Allegations of misuse of EU funds by politically connected individuals or companies.
- The European Commission has triggered a separate conditionality mechanism to withhold funding over rule of law concerns.
- LGBTQ+ and Minority Rights
- Laws seen as discriminating against LGBTQ+ individuals and limiting rights of minorities have drawn strong criticism from EU institutions.
- These policies are viewed as contradicting human rights standards in the EU Charter.
- Constitutional Changes and Democratic Backsliding
- Frequent constitutional amendments and the use of emergency powers during the COVID-19 pandemic have raised alarms about concentration of power in the hands of the government.
The use of emergency powers is not uniquely a Trump thing.
You are wrong there. Germany cannot punish Romania on its own, it needs majority voting. That makes the punishment democratic.Still not DEMOKRAZIC , nein.
Y, Deutschland has committed ALL the offences above, let's have a forensic audit too!
"Konzentrazion of Power" (in the EUSSR)
So we got there in the end! Cheers. Hehe![]()
No, the EU basis is that Any One Member can veto a measure. This is specifically to prevent the "ganging up" on one member. You are wrong there. Germany cannot punish Romania on its own, it needs majority voting. That makes the punishment democratic.
Just a talking point. The far right plays the victim card. That does not bother me. What does is their modus operandi of wilfully breaking some laws or international treaties just to gain kudos with their base. The result is perfectly respectable people, never break any law themselves, get attracted by their lawlessness. It's just like people watching a thriller because they know it is just fiction, nobody really dies. However, when a far right politician like Trump garnered enough support to win, people lose jobs and pensions etc. The rate of fall on the stock market is now highest since 1932. More than 300,000 job losses have been planned by big businesses that sell mainly outside the usa to avoid supply chain problems. Back then, 1932, 23% of the workforce were jobless. Add that tally to rest of the world. I wouldn't be surprised if Trump is the most hated politician on the planet right now. Putin hasn't created a tenth of the damage Trump has. We now have a bunch of would-be Trumps in Europe and no law to stop them. The future for our grandchildren is bleak. Dictatorship and robotised manufacturing.Even the other candidate agreed it was a "trampling of democracy"
In a parallel universe in which trump's agenda worked and countries established trade agreements favourable to the US with it quickly, tariffs would still be terminal for it, make us companies less competitive internationally, inflate domestic US prices, inflation, decrease productivity (protectionism, loss of international competition does that).Just a talking point. It can work if American car workers accept to compete with Mexicans South of the border. Mexicans work hard for $6 an hour to assemble cars against $30 an hour atm. Apple employ indirectly 300,000 educated and skilled Chinese to build their products. They can't even assemble a complete iPhone in india and Vietnam. Forget about using robots to replace humans in the usa atm. China is years ahead in making robots. Just look at the number of 'dark factories' in China. They don't switch on lights because the robots don't need lights. In a parallel universe in which trump's agenda worked and countries established trade agreements favourable to the US with it quickly, tariffs would still be terminal for it, make us companies less competitive internationally, inflate domestic US prices, inflation, decrease productivity (protectionism, loss of international competition does that).
If it weren't for the secondary impact on the poor, working class in other countries (Vietnam etc) I'd be quite chuffed - a world that's less US centric could be a good thing.

Apple can only make their phones in China. They have tried Vietnam and India but all the parts have to come from China. Their relationship with China is a symbiosis. If apple dont want china making there phones they can just turn off the software sure you can but all the parts from the market but without the software you cant pair parts to the phone like a new screen ect.
