I see the City fired a warning shot about that - suggesting the economy will slump further if she does do that to BoE.
when you want to borrow big, lenders want to be reassured that you'll pay them back so your reputation is your most precious guarantee. Give the BoE to Truss and/or Kwasi Kwarteng does not enhance the BoE's reputation. It's obvious to most people except when it's an inconvenient truth to her chosen strategy. No wonder why 35% of tory membership prefer BJ to stay.

The scheme got off to a bad start with large numbers of meters being installed that were incompatible and couldn't be switched between suppliers. By the time newer meters became available tens of thousands of them had to be changed.

Another major failing here is the large number of inoperative smart meters due to inadequate mobile phone coverage. That's true of mine and a large number of my neighbours, the government claims of 95% or more coverage falling far short even here in London. That of course means the hope of the suppliers that meter readers could be dispensed with has failed to materialise. Like many in various parts of the country I still have to feed my meter reading to the supplier every month and have a very occasional meter reader call to check. There's even been some companies set up to collect meter readings for suppliers.

But the biggest failing from the government's point of view is that there has been no reduction in usage, the very thing the government put them in for. They had claimed originally that the scheme would cost £11 billion and save as much due to a reduction in the need for more power stations, but it's now believed to have cost some £80 billions. Think of the generating infrastructure that could have built!

It was a crackpot scheme from beginning to end.

The French version is not dependent on mobile phones... I understand it uses a data link in the power line itself.. the obvious way,..a similar technology to the homelink powerline internet extenders . Traditionally in France the job of meter readings was a summer holiday task for university students.

That's far too simple.
The UK has to have multiple layers of involvement, power companies, smart meter suppliers, smart meter installers, a company to arrange transmission of the data, companies to provide the actual means of data communication which don't even use the same system in the whole UK. Scotland and the north of England using long range radio and the south of England using the O² 2g network. Finally there is the Data Communications Company which exists to collate all the data and supply it to the power companies.

Unfortunately, the government set targets for the power companies to install smart meters, these targets didn't mention working smart meters so we have around 31% of installations not working.

Seems to be a typical UK clusterfuck.

And our choice to use mobile phone connections means that the meters will require upgrading to 4G/5G as 2G/3G gets removed.

Just hope they get it done before we go on to 6G...

They've proved so useless to either supply companies or government I hope they decide to abandon the scheme, before any more billions are wasted on trying to get it to work properly.

These are far too sensible for the UK Danidl.

Having things work well just isn't our way.

In fairness this is not completely daft, given their experience with Smart Meters. The intention of those was for the people to be able to monitor their usage and be able to reduce it, the government hoping to reduce the need for new power stations.

Of course as I predicted that was a daft idea, most already only use what they need to so there has been no saving and the Smart meter scheme has been a stupid waste of over 80 billion pounds.

So having been stung once, it's entirely understandable that the government won't ask the public to save energy again, knowing it wont work.

.
It is now ten months since EDF installed a smart meter in the house, on day one the installer couldn't get it to display electrical activity.
Despite my monthly telephone and email complaints it still doesn't.
EDF insist that it should now work.
I wonder if it ever will?
By the way, what manner of beast is a meter reader?
Interestingly on my account on the EDF website, there are Gas readings but no Electricity records.
Have I somehow dropped into a parallel reality where it's free?

If only they were unable to charge for what it is not reporting.

I assume that, despite not displaying, it is sending data to EDF?

Well the lad arrived to day. .. Scheduled anytime between 8 am and 12. So he arrived about 8:30, and had the old unit off and the new unit in and operating in about 20 minutes . So we were without electricity for maybe 15 minutes tops. E took photos of the old meter readings to forward on to EdF. Thats all the good news ..now the bad. There are apps which allow me to interrogate the Linky over the internet in Android or iPhone , but these are geo locked to French account holders , so I cannot easily access them, or even download them in France.

Smart meter is best thing we have ever had fitted. Under duress from energy company we were involved with at time we agreed yo have one in our East Coast holiday home. It's never worked from day 1 (about 6 years ago??) We are continually under billed and according to them using zero energy. We, ve given up trying to tell them we actually use a lot. (freezers, water heater and a couple of rooms electric heaters)..
I want same meter at home.

Same happened to me, but eventually I got a letter from EDF apologising for being unable to get it working.

I later changed supplier, but that "smart" meter still sits there inactive in dumb insolence.

Never mind, at least it works and you'll be able to get some local use of it. As you can see from all our posts, that can be uncommon here, with them just inert lumps on the wall.

It's taken a long time, but at last support for my view from the outset that most of the lockdown measures were not necessary and very harmful.

Rishi Sunak is largely expressing that view, revealing how he was being gagged to prevent him from saying so before. Ironically he wasted billions as chancellor, supporting a policy he didn't agree with.

Price cap set at £3549.00 There will be some happy faces this morning.

My garage has 1500 kilos of coal stacked up In there, the wood store is full and more wood is stored at the top of the garden. Let’s get those CO2 emissions going.

Incidentally, I didn’t realise the cost of wind and sunshine had risen so dramatically. It’s either that or the retards who run the government have linked the unit price for renewables to the cost of generating a unit using gas. Yep, guess what? The windmill owners must be laughing their cocks off today.

I‘m pretty sure the lights will be going out this winter. The government have said they won’t, which makes me more confident they will.

ps has anyone seen the government recently? It feels like nobody is at the controls.
