Tories manage to scramble brains:

UK government to table no-confidence motion in itself
Unexpected move does not directly criticise Boris Johnson and comes after Labour version rejected

they'll blame Boris and Hancock for that.
They have already denounced Sunak's economic record as chancellor, cancelled net zero plan, attacked green levy on energy bills etc.. so I expect there will be more to come.
One thing though, I am a bit surprised that Hunt paired with McVey. Did he try to morph into a avid brexiteer? In that case, I write off his chances and reckon when he's knocked out, his supporters would support Penny Mordaunt who is much more balanced than the other 7.
To me, it’s a lineup of liars, sneaks, also rans, failures, imbeciles and gross incompetents. Quite depressing.

One that I’d never heard of and has probably emerged as my favourite of the dregs is Kemi Badenoch. At least she has actually done work, knows how to use money, and when she speaks, I don’t vomit.

you never heard of her because she hasn't done or said much until now. She will probably keep her fourth place in the race.
Penny Mordaunt is the most likely next PM unless her competitors unearth something damaging in the next 4 weeks. Mordaunt is a lot better than the rest.

Heaven help us. She's an ex magician's assistant who firmly believes in homeopathy. As if that's not bad enough, she nails her name to any charity going solely to gain status, not actually do anything for them.

She's briefly held a long string of government posts, often for only a few days in each, so has no relevant experience.

After Thatcher and May, I don't believe in third time lucky.

Well, yes, to a point. But the female prime ministers are up against teflon Tony, Cameron, Boris in the 'let's see who managed to completely **** the world most' stakes. At least may - and even thatcher - didn't destabilise the middle east or almost split the country and eu.

none of those is a fault though. As for third time lucky, how would you rate Thatcher against Heath, May against Johnson?
Mordaunt does not bend with the wind like Sunak or Truss.

But which way are you going with that?

Someone who has no spine just gets blown about.
OR
Someone who doesn't bend is less able to withstand heavy winds.
Truss and Hunt are be-leavers, later day converted to brexit. Hunt being out of the race, threw his support to Sunak so perhaps he is not a real be-leaver.
Braverman is on the way out later today or Monday, Truss is now becoming more brexiteer than most members of the ERG hoping to garner Braverman's supporters.
Sunak is unlikely to win over the majority of tory membership. YouGov poll is very clear on this.
The choice for tory MPs is pretty clear: moderate Mordaunt or be-leaver Truss who will be a puppet of the ERG. Who would more likely to save their jobs at the next general election?

You've got to be kidding. Thatcher split this country like no other, made an enemy of the EU and waged an entirely unnecessary war over the Falklands when the UN were willing to put in troops and force Argentinia to withdraw for negotiations to begin. And that is without mentioning all the BSE deaths she caused and her following Reagonomics, putting us on the path to ever more fiscal imprudence.

And as for the serially incompetent May, I won't waste words on her.

With a degree in chemistry you don't see a strong belief in homeopathy is a fault! She'll announce a huge amount for cost of living relief, dilute it down until there's no visible money and consider she's solved the problem.

Otherwise see my reply to Jonathan.

Mordaunt does not bend with the wind like Sunak or Truss.
Bending easily is an essential political quality in a world of constant never ending change.

I don't believe in homeopathy but I am not at all bothered that some people believe in it. Just look at religions. Is there much difference? Both have their magic so diluted but people still believe.

She only said that she will half the VAT and duty on fuel, increase the personal tax allowance to help with living cost. I approve of both her pledges.

quote:

Penny Mordaunt: Critics call her ‘part time Penny’ but is the members’ choice too ‘woke’ to be Tory leader?
...
The trade minister was asked what she would do about the fact some in the Tory party see her as merely “Theresa May with bigger hair”, or that the public barely know who she is.

“I would like to know you all better,” Ms Mordaunt said, before going on to reassure Conservative MPs and members that she was their “best shot” at winning another term in government.

If public recognition of the 49-year-old former Defence Secretary is low now, her profile is about to be raised significantly.

She is, however, popular among party members. A Yougov poll carried out on Tuesday saw her as the preferred candidate among the party faithful who will, ultimately, decide the election.

On Wednesday she came second in the first round of voting in the Tory leadership contest, running Rishi Sunak close on 88 votes to 67. Many see her as a strong contender to face the ex-Chancellor in the final run-off.

Her campaign launch – with promises on easing the cost of living crisis, more power for parents with childcare spending, a civil defence force and a pledge to get the party playing the “old stuff” again such as low tax, small state and personal responsibility – has helped her ratings climb among Tory MPs and, according to the latest YouGov poll, Conservative members.

So? I hold all religion in utter contempt, knowing it to be a major failing of humanity.

Part time Penny indeed, she was defence secretary for 85 days.

Precisely the same people who lumbered us with Johnson. Little wonder they are likely to make as big a mistake again.

I still think the country is better off with Mordaunt than with Truss or Sunak.

as expected, Suella Braverman is now out of the race. Tugendhat will probably be out in round 3, most of his supporters would go to Sunak's camp. Kemi Badenoch will be out in round 4, most of her supporters will go to Truss or Mordaunt. One of them will face Sunak in the members vote. Both Truss and Badenoch are right wingers, Mordaunt's supporters are brexiters, so I expect the person who will face Sunak, either Truss or Mordaunt, will have more parliamentary support than Sunak .
I can't see how Sunak can win.
Sunak is smarter than his opponent, I reckon Kier Starmer must be pleased if Sunak does not win.

Steve Baker pointed out that whatever happen it won't be sunak (yougov tory members poll). Not sure starmer will be pleased, the fake fuel station pics, greencard, nondom status etc are likely the visible edge of a very rich seam

Am frankly astonished we still exist as a political entity. But what has been more damaging? deregulation of financial services or brexit; or Falklands vs Iraq? If I could time travel I'd probably rather experience black Wednesday than the leave vote

Exactly, our loss if Truss or Mordaunt win.

I don't really want any of them, but if it has to one, I'd rather it be the smartest one.
