Japan with the Olympic games in progress but with no audiences has nevertheless suffered a large surge in Covid cases.

To alert the citizens of Tokyo to the increased risk, the authorities arranged a switch off of all the street lights, but everyone turned out onto the streets which became crowded to watch this event!

Talk about can't win! :D

Good morning, I’ve been away for a while on a secret mission.

What’s the word on here for the apparent fall in coronavirus infections. We hit in excess of 50K infections per day, then we removed most measures intended to reduce transmission and infections plummet. What’s going on? What’s the theory for this phenomenon on here?

"Infections are down, fact."... Needs to be qualified by REPORTED.
Just to indicate what I mean . I had occasion to attend Hospital procedure last week. This involves a 60 mile trip each way. On arrival I had to fill up a questionnaire. Only one question on it required a real yes no answer.. had I been abroad in the last fortnight. , All the other questions could be fudged ..are you headachy, cough , in contact with a known CV19 patient. Now having starved for 12 hours and travelling 120 miles round trip, ..what kind of answer would you expect ,I would give to subjective opinion questions?. And had I come up from Cork, ..200 miles away, I would have been damn sure that my Covid App had been switched off.

Picked up a little data regarding the Delta Variant ...by way of" Nature ".
The reason it is worse than earlier variants is because it is more productive. Compared to the original from Wuhan, it produces 1200 times more virons or virus particles. Therefore it is effective in starting reinfection after 4 days incubation ,as compared to 6 days for earlier variants.
From another source , the minimum dose of CV19 virons necessary to start an infection is about 1000. This can explain why even the fully vaccinated can get a Breakover infection is because they are getting a massive invasion.

Sounds very much in tune with the method of reporting crime levels! :D

Surely this is enough to put an end to this government?
I'd like to think so.

But if we imagine an inquiry, a Supreme Court case, whatever else, all coming down heavily on this, there will still be vast numbers who vote tory.

Many years ago, I met a young USA citizen - can't even remember the circumstances. What is still there, though, was that someone (me or someone else) just happened to mention Russia in a conversation. Totally innocently - not as if they were demanding everyone join the communist party. She froze - like a pointer - and asked how the person could have been so insulting as to mention that place in front of her, a USA citizen. The anger was palpable.

All these years later, we see citizens of the USA nonchalantly ignoring evidence that Putin did want the orange idiot in the White House. And they even want him back there.

There has been a huge shift in what people are willing and able to see and react to. I don't want the pointer-like reactions. Nor do I want this couldn't give a damn attitude.

In fairness to the public both in the USA and here, I don't think it is truly a "couldn't give damn attitude" since that would be a positive reaction.

I think it's more a despairing resignation that things never improve and often get worse, no matter who is in charge and what their policy is. There's only so much the public will take before they just give up on the system.

Even governments can just give up too, like ours giving up on Covid control and just leaving it to the vaccines and the public. Northern Ireland's administration too, with almost half of the population still not fully vaccinated and 27% without even one dose, they are immediately closing all the mass vaccination centres. Anyone who wants a jab now has to make the effort and book an appointment with their doctor.

.. Contrast with RoI where we have opened walk in vaccination clinics, ..no appointment necessary, and allow Children above 12 ,with parental consent get vaccinated. Our figures now exceed the UKs for fully and partially vaccinated. Don't contradict me with website info... We had a huge Cyberattack on the databases of the HSE about a month ago , and information is more sketchy

Can we have another brexit referendum if it is our settled will?

Scottish independence vote will happen if public wants it, says Michael Gove
Gove says referendum will occur if there is ‘a settled will in favour’, as Ian Blackford says voters have already spoken

All too many people have said that they really couldn't give a damn and would vote for him again.

I was amused to read in the FT that Boris’s Eton school fees were paid not by his father, but by the EU, for whom Stanley J was working at the time, as there was a grant available to pay boarding school fees. Presumably it was meant to be for schools near Brussels, but anyway....

Must be where Farage got his inspiration from!

There'd be no point.

After the events of the last five years there is no way the EU and its members would accept us back at present. They were sick of us and our constant whingeing even before we voted to leave, as they made clear to John Major.

Memories of that five years will have to fade for at least a decade before there's any chance of re-entry.

Oh yes, I agree. It was me being facetious. With them not even allowing a confirmatory brexit vote.

The UK has a right to apply... And the EU does not do petty. ..that is the advantage /disadvantage of being a rules based organisation. But before anything like that would or could happen, the UK would need to demonstrate that it would follow the current rules, and not chafe and whine at each one. Customs alignment would be the first necessary step.
However I really don't believe that the UK is ready at any level to engage
