The Brazil situation is dreadful since the appearance of the P1 variant
These are variants of SARs-CoV-2, not new strains These would become known as B1.351 and P1 respectively. Both have mutations that allow them to reinfect people who should have immunity after a previous infection or vaccination.
Imagine the havoc they could wreak here with so many only having the first jab, and none of the young vaccinated.
We need someone capable in charge and massive investment in developing and manufacturing vaccines, not let private companies turn it into a cash cow

If, as you say, this variant infects vaccinated people, why are you banging on about only having received one dose of vaccine? One or two doses, it will still infect people if what you say is true.

Uniquely, the Oxford vaccine is not currently making a profit. Give the developers and manufacturers some credit for that.

We don't know that yet. What is known is that the double jab increases protection particularly for the Pfizer which starts to wane after 3 weeks. The objective is to reduce the pool

The vaccine greatly reduces the effects of an infection, no hospitalisation etc, so being fully vaccinated is wise protection against the effects of any SARS2 reinfection.

Only for a few months, the no profit agreement ends soon so they'll be able to up the price to keep their shareholders happy. Of course if the fuss about blood clots is maintained, that will cramp their ability to do that.

Indeed ,as flecc say. All the current vaccines work by targeting the corona spike , so even if the newer variants are more lethal, and have perhaps fewer spikes, the current vaccinations will provide certain levels of protection. When the virus learns to hide its spikes, then we will need another strategy. Massive vaccination is what gives the medical community the opportunity to address other aspects of the virus.
Basically the cat is out of the bag, particularly in the West by failing to quarantine when the problem was small, and cheap to fix, and now we are playing catch-up and need to use everything to reduce prevalence

Imagine it in the EU with a fraction of the UK’s number vaccinated, the virus raging out of control, non of the young vaccinated and dithering over a vaccine that poses a minuscule threat compared to the disease it protects against. Imagine that! You are a lucky man to live in the U.K.

Our glorious (not) Prime Minister once had a cunning plan when he was foreign secretary...

"Boris Johnson attempted to expand British territory by purchasing areas of Svalbard in the Arctic sea. The Norwegian archipelago is a largely free internationalised area and had Johnson been successful would have likely triggered a land scramble in the Arctic.
Idea was part of Boris Johnson’s post Brexit assertive Britain plan to acquire additional fishing waters & strategic area power. The problem highlighted by civil servants: It would risk the traditional international nature of the Arctic and put at risk decades of pace there.
Move by Johnson came from his time while foreign minister which suggests that perhaps Trumps later move for Greenland may have been part of a reaction to increased jockeying for land & power in the Arctic that Trump wanted to win.

Upsetting Russia and America all in one go
Sheer Genius (not)

Do you deliberately misunderstand?
By half vaccinating our population we are just as vulnerable as citizens of the EU
It's damned hard to get past your bigotry isn't it?

Now think what you have just written and what that means
Go on, really try hard to grasp the significance of having less than a full defence
Let me know if you have problems working that out.

Yes, just like the EU, 10 deaths today, 2300 new infections, 273 people admitted to hospital and a total of 37 million vaccinations admitted.

Oh, hang on a minute, it’s nothing like the EU you massive clown. They are in an appalling mess.

You are such a monumental idiot, incapable of understanding that it’s better to have 37 million people with 85% protection from hospitalisation, than it is to have only 17 million protected, that I am not going to engage in this. You’ve had it explained to you, but your political sick mind can’t absorb it.

From the disagrees it seems someone struggles to understand the problem too!

You really are beyond help, try again, if it can infect a person without full protection there is an increased risk of further and more lethal variants evolving that can beat that too
That turns them into basket cases.
Why can't you get that in your right wing brain?
It's obvious!
No wonder the country is in the state it is with such slow thinkers around
You really don't want to face unpleasant possibilities .
The trouble is when they come, no amount of playing the numbers game as you are will be worth a Tinkers Damn
Once you have been sold on an idea it's almost impossible for you to reconsider it
Try this we have 17 Million with a very good survival chance
37 Million who we desperately hope (even there is no science to make that hope certainty) will get away with a light dose of the disease.
The truth is the danger has become more acute because of these new variants.
The very thing I was objecting to when the dosing period was changed to con the suckers to think it was salvation.
It is, and was, a gamble that is starting not to look like a good one.

JHC. The games still in play. That 60% of the UK population have had a jab, is excellent, that 7% have been vaccinated is great. However that lead of fully vaccinated is only about 1% to 1.5% higher than the EU average. I reiterate yet again that the UK has done this on the backs of the EU.
The UK has delivered 36M jabs and the EU has delivered 80M . Since the vast majority of vaccinations in the EU are the Pfizer, ..for the painfully obvious reason that the AZ remains in short supply, the EU continue to deliver the second dose at the recommended interval.
While you indulge in your obligatory self congratulations of being born English, reflect that any of the Pfizer candidates, waiting more than 3 weeks are potentially variant factories in waiting. You might also look back at where the UK was about 5 weeks ago.

Really? then you had better look at this

What percentage of the population is fully vaccinated? While the UK is way ahead of the rest of Europe on total vaccinations administered, other countries are ahead in terms of the percentage of their population fully vaccinated against the disease, which usually means two doses of the jab. The UK, keen to get first jabs in as many people as possible, is waiting longer than other countries to administer the second one.

You can sum that up
The greater mass of our people are fairly well protected against hospitalisation by the cuurent variants round here

You can't say that about these new strains that seem to evolve rapidly

And to make matters worse these new variants are proving lethal to younger people we are not vaccinating

From the BMJ
Growing evidence shows that young people are not only more likely to get infected with P.1 but also to die from it, some experts have warned. The Brazilian Association of Intensive Care Medicine said that the number of 18-45 year olds requiring intensive care for covid-19 in February to March this year was three times greater than in September to November 2020,5 and coronavirus related deaths in that age group have almost doubled.
