Coronavirus outbreaks climb at U.S. meatpacking plants despite protections, Trump order
Rachel Axon, Kyle Bagenstose, Sky Chadde USA TODAY
Published 1:35 PM EDT Jun 6, 2020
Coronavirus outbreaks at U.S. meatpacking plants continue to soar as the beleaguered industry ramps up production, scales back plant closures and tries to return to normal in the weeks after President Donald Trump declared it an essential operation.

Trump’s April 28th executive order followed the industry’s dire warnings of meat shortages and invoked the Defense Production Act to compel slaughterhouses and processing plants to remain open.

The order had a chilling effect on the steady drumbeat of closures that had come to symbolize the crisis throughout April and early May. Nearly three dozen coronavirus-affected plants temporarily shuttered in the month leading up to Trump’s executive order. In the five weeks since then, just 13 have closed, according to tracking from the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.

Meat production, which had briefly tanked, quickly rebounded after the order to near pre-coronavirus levels and quelled consumer fears of pork, beef and poultry shortages.

But the number of coronavirus cases tied to meatpacking plants has more than doubled since then, topping 20,400 infections across 216 plants in 33 states, according to tracking from USA TODAY and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.

At least 74 people have died.

That’s despite widespread implementation of protective measures like temperature checks, plastic barriers and social distancing meant to curb the virus’ spread inside the plants. Some of the recent outbreaks happened at facilities that had taken such steps.

Tyson Foods, for example, announced in mid-April it was providing face masks to all employees and installing barriers between workers. Since then, 24 of its plants have reported outbreaks, including two in Iowa that sickened more than 800 workers total. The company had just five plants with outbreaks prior to the announcement of safety measures.

Tommie, just exactly who are the "we" you speak of? from the critical comments you delight in making against the Southern Irish, coming from someone in Northern Ireland, in what is after all a population imposed on the locals from the mainland, it is way out of court.
You are in fact to many of the Irish part of a group that you are railing on about, remember?
An imposed population that despises the locals?
And another thing to remember the government you support over Brexit isn't going to put an end to them coming is it? the chief clown is now begging people to come back that have had the sense to leave.
Anyone do sub-titles for this - can`t make head nor tail of it!!

Probably the ramblings of some toilet attendant who`s spent too long a day checking Hulls urinals are functioning correctly..

Gentlemens of course

Hmmmmm..

flecc have you seen this? Germany are to increase the rebate on new electric cars up to 9000 Euros. If our Government did something similar then I think it would see a massive increase in electric car vehicles in the UK.

When will you all begin to acknowledge that a good number of the people you have allowed to come and live in this country -and now their children- absolutely despise us and everything we stand for?
[/QUOTE]
I gather with "us" you're referring to knuckledragging neanderthal like yourself? Everyone else has "come to live in this country". Some, like me, on the basis of professional qualification in short supply in the uk. But you're right, I absolutely despise you're uninformed xenophobia, as much as, say, what boris stands for

Didn't I see a news item this week that our US trade negotiators had completely caved in on their promise to keep out US food that didn't meet (meat?) our standards.
Cabinet ministers have been told to say they have no specific policy.

Which obviously means they are working their way to do whatever they want - stuff us.

Haven't we been eating chicken from overseas for years though ? If you look on the side of a box of processed food that contains chicken it often say's "Produced in the UK using Chicken From Thailand" for example, Pizza's, Pies, Curries & Chinese style products. That's not the US obviously but I wonder what processing that Chicken has to go through before it arrives on a Tesco shelf.

We Irish are a mixed race entirely. Some of our groups include the Hugenot families who escaped from France, ,the Quakers who escaped persecution in England , the Presbyterian brethren who would not conform to Anglican , the leftovers from Cromwell's Roundheads, in north Meath, given land as wages, the good protestants folk in Laois and Offaly in ER1s time, the Welsh Normans and the French Normans, the Norwegian and Danish Vikings , and the older Celtic and Spanish influences . More recently we had Germans left over from the War,..WW2 and Cold , and now Nigerians, Poles and curiously Brazilians. So we aren't very fazed .

You shouldn't have to have to tolerate such prejudice from people who should have grown up by now.

It’s a great idea, but unfortunately in this country, the rebate will be stolen by the manufacturers / dealerships jacking up the price. Banks do similar by stealing the ISA tax advantages on people’s savings and we saw the VAT cut stolen by sellers when it was cut last time. That’s just the way people roll in the UK, they can’t help it.

Our method is different. We first had a £5000 rebate, but as soon a there was a sign of a few buyers that was thought too much so it was reduced to £4500. A sudden much bigger surge in e-car buying in 2018 meant they made a further reduction to £3500. BUT, the rebates are always given.

I wouldn't be surprise if that gets reduced still more, since the largest selling car so far this year is a pure electric car and e-cars sales proportion is exceeding petrol and diesel.

That is how short sighted our government is, they have lost the ability to think. They have golden opportunities now, such as one or more of the following to boost e-car sales:

Removing the Covid-19 restrictions on distant travel from e-cars only, on grounds of none of the exhaust pollution which adversely affects the Covid rates.

Reintroducing the fossil fuel rationing that we had in the early 1970s during the Arab Oil supply crisis on similar grounds.

And/or a very big leap in tax on petrol and diesel to pay the Covid-19 bill for dealing with the infection.

Norway went to whole hog with numerous incentives long ago and well over all half of all new car registrations have been e-cars for a couple of years now. Petrol and diesel car drivers are second class citizens there.

Err.. well, NO...... except for the ethnic cleansing of some types.....Right??

Revealed: why 40,000 Protestants fled Ireland in four years
A southern Protestant who always wondered why he felt like 'an outsider' says he has discovered a virtually unknown of exodus of 40,000 Protestants who fled the south from 1920-23 due to sectarian intimidation and murder.

How Protestants were all but ethnically cleansed in South
Author BRIAN KENNAWAY reviews a new book detailing how Protestants in the Republic of Ireland suffered violence and persecution after the Easter Rising and Civil War, and still suffer from more subtle discrimination today
