Brexit, for once some facts.

The overcrowding delays on the roads does the trick quite well, we've already had that happen down here, but limited while we extend the railways capacity.

And of course subsidies as you rightly suggest.

And of course here in London we've switched huge numbers out of cars into public transport and onto bikes with those two strategies. That even included lifelong car user me in 2011 for a few into London journeys, using trains for the first time in 52 years and buses for the first time in 47 years.

So you see it does work on even the most died in the wool car driver, even in his seventies.
.
Outside of London transport infrastructure is so poor and underfunded, it’s not viable. When I worked, I would have spent longer on public transport than I would have done in the workplace. It would take at least £2 trillion to even out London levels of investment in public transport across the U.K. It’s literally un-useable where I live.

Boris Johnson wants a Canada-style trade deal with the EU after Brexit and will accept an 'off-the-shelf' offer made by Brussels
  • The Prime Minister is allegedly prepared to accept an 'off-the-shelf' model
  • It would mean the UK would enjoy almost tariff-free trade with EU countries
  • However, such a deal would not include the services sector in the UK
  • This could shrink the UK's economy by almost five per cent over 15 years
In other words as predicted May's Deal wins in the end.
Now watch the fun

Perhaps we who would rather be in the EU should consider that the leavers never shut up, never stopped criticising (all too often, on false grounds), never left to go to a country that is not in the EU.

At some point, perhaps we need to re-label - as rejoiners?

rejoiner

Noun
(plural rejoiners)

  1. One who joins (an organisation, etc.) again.
  2. A brief introduction to a radio show, etc. when it continues after a commercial or other break.
There is slight amusement from considering defintion 2.

Who remembers UKIPs only MP?

Mr Carswell said he would be celebrating Brexit but did not want to be triumphant.

He said: “My daughter, out of her own pocket money, bought a jar of Nutella and we were going to open it to celebrate Brexit.

“But every time we got close to opening it Theresa May’s deal was rejected.

“The jar is still just about before its best before date, so we will have it for breakfast on Saturday.

"I’ll eat more of it than I’ve ever had in my life,” he joked.

Enjoy it while you can as Nutella is shipped in from Europe...

We are leaving, let’s put it to bed now. There is no point in being cross about it for eternity. You won’t achieve anything other than making yourself poorly. I don’t like it either, but **** happens.

Boris Johnson is going to accept the deal which he recently described as being a deal that no British Prime Minister could or should accept. There isn’t going to be the extra £350 000 000 per week for the NHS, which he promised, either.

Let’s just get on with it and count how many Brexit voters have voted themselves out of work.

I’m tracking the Coronavirus plane on Flightradar 24. It’s currently over Sweeden. Not long before it’s here now. It’s like tracking Santa on Christmas Eve.

Made by Ferrero - the boss of which company very recently took something like GBP 546 million as a bonus.

And a company which has been identified as exploiting child labour.

We all know that massive bonuses have been the prelude to company bankruptcies...

It's not solely about investment far from it, it's as much how the available money is used. Public transport could have been far better without Tory doctrinaire policies. The privatisation of buses was an unmitigated disaster and remains so, it's only in London where we have a single overriding public transport authority that the buses and indeed all public transport is viable.

And as I reminded a few posts ago, the only successful period in the entire 180 years of our Railways was under state owned and run British Rail. It was far from perfect of course but in real terms they only had a tiny fraction of the subsidy we give todays private rail companies, which still fail.

Whatever one's politics, its been conclusively proved many times in the 180 years history of rail that only state ownership of rail works, not just here but all around the world.

My best news this week isn't the Brexit day, it was midweek with the Tory admission that Labour is and always has been right on rail. That was when Grant Shapps said the nationalisation of Northern Rail will not necessarily be the only one to join the existing nationalised Eastern Main Line in being run by the DfT.

Well it's Brexit Day, and I'm feeling ambivalent about the whole thing.
On the one hand I'm a bit disappointed that we are leaving but on the other hand I'm happy that the NHS will be getting an extra £350m next week.
Is that the English NHS?

How about GIG and SNHS and whatever it is called in NI? Where is our 350 million a week?

It might crash in the North Sea yet. Then we'll all be eating infected fish, I gather the virus came from a fish market in the first place.

I agree with all of that, but it doesn’t alter the fact that like in my area, public transport is a complete non-starter for many other areas outside London too. It’s not an option regardless of how expensive they make driving a car.
