Co. Down, N. Ireland, U.K.
and the refusal of the British establishment to sanction action against the Ulster Volunteers who had been importing illegal weapons from Germany, in direct confrontation with the British establishment. You could not make this stuff up, but the UV were in open rebellion with the UK ,siding with Germany on the eve of a world war.

The overcrowding delays on the roads does the trick quite well, we've already had that happen down here, but limited while we extend the railways capacity.

And of course subsidies as you rightly suggest.

And of course here in London we've switched huge numbers out of cars into public transport and onto bikes with those two strategies. That even included lifelong car user me in 2011 for a few into London journeys, using trains for the first time in 52 years and buses for the first time in 47 years.

So you see it does work on even the most died in the wool car driver, even in his seventies.
.
Not happening here in the North, when they renationalise we need trains that run at normal speeds, regularly and reliably, and costing a fraction of what they do now to use, not something intended as executive travel.
And the bus companies are cutting services all over the county through lack of passengers and high fares
Its almost at the point of being cheaper to travel by taxi.

How do you get people out of cars and into trains?
It reminds me of Bus lanes intended to do the same thing, all they did was bring money in from fines and make traffic jams worse.
We don't need FASTER TRAINS, just better and cheaper ones, by all means ban internal flights, they are a privilege of the Elite that can be dispensed with.
Free travel on trains in fact all public transport paid for by taxation is the way forward.
While I don't agree that they should all be free, a cost that is an inducement to shift away from the private car would certainly make a lot of sense.

To hop along to Carmarthen by train, for two, is £42.40 (day return).
To drive, at 40p per mile, is £25.20.

No wonder the trains are so quiet.

But, overall, we should be going towards a future with less vehicular travel, whether car or train or anything else. More walking and cycling.

then we have to subsidise rail transport, half the price for a start.

You need that as well as the high speed trains for people travelling to and from you. All round efficiency.

Only because they are doing it wrong, though not their fault of course, entirely due to central government policies.

Here in London we do it ourselves through TfL and it's totally different. We've doubled our bus fleet from 4500 to 9000 in the last twenty years, almost all buses are less than 10 years old and very environmentally friendly. There's plenty of passengers, bus travel being very popular.

Black cab taxi from Central Croydon borough to my home, £12, minicab £10.

Bus fare door to door, £1.50, and that includes partly using the trams instead.

As you see, rather different and showing what is possible with an open mind and true labour policies.

Or to take a (fairly knackered) tube from my end of the line in the shires to central london and back £10 which against all odds doesnt compete with driving an electric vehicle the 26 miles in(and not waiting half an hour at a wet cold station) and paying a quid for four hours parking right outside the office. I think train travel could be a lot cheaper. Was thinking the other morning that if a tube train does that journey ten times a day and transport say 5000 commuters the company earns around £50k/train/day

It arrived in Hull months ago.
Second news flash. Tory rebels are demanding a vote of no confidence in Boris. Likely outcome wll be a fressh GE and Corbyn interim PM whilst Labour appoint new leader. (reported in Hull Record)
Your comments have become delusional OG. Rebellion my arse. A few dissenters. Means nothing.
I think you are the most dogmatic person I have ever encountered.
You remind me of that Japanese soldier found in jungle 25 years after WW2, insisting Japan had not lost. You are barking my friend, and up the wrong tree.
Againn please explain any mechanics to remove Tories from power within next 5 years. You keep shouting silly words like rebellion, protest and probation but fail to explain how any of it removes Tories or Boris.
With an 80 majority there is no machinery, process or way to remove a government. Unless we have a revolution.... Brits aren't good at that. It rains too much.
A revolution organised and led by Corbyn and Abott. Mmmm. What could go wrong.
His name is Corbyn not Cromwell.
Or perhaps site of Bob Geldoff barging down Thames flicking Vs at Houses of Parliament will make all Tories resign.
I know, a good internet Petition should do it. We the under signed ask, no demand, you pesky tories resign and hand power to Labour. That should work OG. We the undersigned believe the Brexit result was advisory and manipulated by Putin, just ignore it. Great idea OG.
Wouldnt hurt would it. Just a waste of time though.

You're taking this really badly aren't you? what on earth makes you keep coming out with these sour grapes , time after time? about the Labour Party?
Who cares? they are not in the picture.
You really have a very limited horizon when it comes to politics, especially when the country is being run by a junta as here.
Already Boris is facing dissent among his stooges and all that we have to do it watch the fun.
If your arse is having a rebellion, I'm sure a dose of syrup of figs will help.
After all what am I predicting that is so unlikely?
Boris will take the easy course of Brino which means it takes a bit longer for the proverbial to hit the fan, or cock up the negotiations , which will hand the country to Trump.
Just how is he going to work a miracle and not end up with huge numbers of very angry people on his hands?
This shows what could happen back in the days of the "Poll Tax
"
The poll tax (or community charge) was supposed to make local council finance fairer and more accountable. Instead it triggered civil disobedience and riots and a rebellion in the Conservative Party.

Cabinet papers for 1989 and 1990, released today at the National Archives in Kew, reveal the reaction to the crisis at the heart of government. They show how involved the prime minister herself was.

And they pinpoint the moment it dawned on her that her flagship policy had turned into a political disaster which was hitting, not Labour local councils, but her natural supporters.

The size of the files alone - there are nine thick manila folders compiled over 18 months - are evidence of how far the poll tax dominated government thinking. Mark Dunton, a specialist in modern records at the National Archives, calls it a "juggernaut".

And that was child's play to implement compared to Brexit

More power to your legs , if doing a 50 mile round trip as a commuter, even with an ebike.

Something to remember
We continue to be a full member of the Council of Europe, which we co-founded in 1950. The European flag and the anthem Ode to Joy are part of the Council of Europe, not of the EU and so is the European Convention on Human Rights, which we shall also continue to be a part of.

And Tommie, my references to the Ireland of 1912, is an extremely accurate, if very concise summary. There never was a Curragh Mutiny ..The Curragh Camp in Kildare being the headquarters of the British Army , only because no order was given. The Home Office conferred with the War Office in Whitehall and a straw poll of sentiment was taken. The question basically being, will you disarm the UV?. The overwhelming majority of the officers said, they would prefer to resign their commissions

You haven't explained how Tories/Boris are made to vacate No10. Just lots of rubbish. Oh, yes we can sit and laugh at the infighting but nothing else.

On the transport thing. Price of Porsche Caymans is crazy low. Arguably best ever sports car yet made with circa 40k on clock, a 3.4 flat 6 engine, handling to dream about, out brakes anything on road.. For under £15k.I,m getting one. 30 mpg and £350 annual tax. Still a bargain to run. You can stand in queue waiting for a bus. I, m getting a Porsche.(regret selling Boxster)

I use the Ebike more often than the car during the winter months, except when taking my wife out of course.
The bike is a "Big Bear-L" I bought from Woosh on the 23rd Sept 2019 , it now has 863 miles on the clock, when it tops the 1,000 mark i shall do a test report.....
All will be revealed.

Nah, not a chance..

more likely a burger from that clenbuterol infected meat off that Monaghan farm

nasty stuff `angel dust`... but nothing compared to that imported south american beef your EU `friends` are bringing in!

See your farmers have brought Dublin to a standstill already, lets see them compete on price with these imports along with that carbon tax !!!
