Taoiseach Leo Varadkar : "I am the European Union when it comes to these matters.
So the big job in Brussels is within your grasp Leo!
No more irritating elections to win or Irish peasants to annoy you!
From there on in it's a sweet ride on the gravy train and big cash prizes.
Careful tommie you are in danger of obsession, and there's a name for using language like this " Irish peasants to annoy you!"
Remember since you live on the island of Ireland that name naturally applies to you too

They didn't choose to walk away, their governments that they voted in chose to stay.

Their electorates could have kicked them out subsequently but they didn't. Remember what happened when the people of EU and NATO country Spain didn't like their government having their troops fighting in Afghanistan. They kicked them out of power and elected a party who immediately withdrew their troops.

Even the Greek people when given the choice at the worst of their recent situation, chose to stay in the EU and eurozone, rather than return to the drachma and leave.

In all the European countries the people have total control of the choices, should they care to exercise that power.

Perhaps we should try and be generous, he isnt coping well with difficult situation he finds himself in so over reacts on here. Bet he, d be quite innocuous face to face...
You are right I have tried on numerous occasions to offer olive branch but he doesnt see it that way. I, m the enemy I had the audacity and stupidity to vote leave so all insults, arguments, put downs are justified.
Its part of a larger problem around Brexit, he, s displaying exactly whats wrong with our society at moment.
Many insist on not seeing anything from others position and just dismiss their reasoning. He insists I havent made any arguments supporting leave even after being involved in a 50 page argument about democratic deficit and the disconnect around EU government.
Dont forget he, s also suffering affects of Stockholm Syndrome. Make allowances.
Here you go again the man who looks in a mirror and sees someone else.
An argument about democratic deficiency has nothing to do with Brexit and never entered into the leave campaign, nor is it significant now, it's just your personal way of waging a vendetta.
As an example only someone losing his grip on reality would keep posting this and expect to be treated as rational
"Dont forget he, s also suffering affects of Stockholm Syndrome. Make allowances.
We are the ones who have to make allowances, for your juvenile off topic pursuit of a pet hang up you have that makes you attack the EU with even the most meagre of ammunition, that frankly has zero relevance to Brexit.

EU's treatment of Ireland during financial crisis 'outrageous' - former European Commission advisor

A former advisor to the European Commission has described the European Union's treatment of Ireland throughout the financial crisis as “outrageous”.

Philippe Legrain, who advised Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso in 2011 until last year, said Ireland's treatment amounted to "bullying" by the ECB and the EC.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Mr Legrain said it was a mistake for the previous Government to guarantee all Irish bank debts, but it was outrageous for the ECB to threaten to force Ireland out of the monetary union if it failed to do so.

He said the behaviour within Europe amounted to the “very opposite of solidarity” to treat a partner in a bullying way.

Mr Legrain claimed the bullying came mostly from Germany and France, whose banks were exposed in Ireland.

The EU seems to be your raison d'etre.
Very far from the truth, but I can understand you thinking that since you've only recently joined this long thread and I can't expect you to read the whole of it.

Previously however I've posted acknowledgements of all of the EU perceived faults, and explained the reasons for some of them.

My overall position is that I see the end game benefits of the EU as greater than the deficits meanwhile.

But do I see the current EU as perfect? Absolutely not, it's very far from that and indeed cannot be perfect as it's currently structured.

However, as imperfect as it is, I'm convinced on the evidence that we are better off in than out. Not just for economic reasons but as importantly for social reasons.

Are you siting someones opinion as amounting to evidence, just because it fits your agenda?
Leavers do tend to do that even more than remainers and on the flimsiest of evidence at that. The ECB applied the rules, never something a leaver can understand.
Their usual response is to cry foul when caught out.

It does seem very difficult to leave. No one has achieved it yet.

Isn’t that the definition of detention?
No. Policemen with machine guns, barbed wire pointing inwards these are better clues. I visited East Berlin in 1972 ,so have seen first hand. I kept my hand in my passport all 5 hours I was there.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar : "I am the European Union when it comes to these matters.
Ireland’s anti-EU IREXIT party responded by saying that Varadkar was “leaving us in no doubt that he is working primarily for the interests of Brussels. Not Ireland”.

The chances of a No Deal Brexit continue to rise.

You failed to respond when I asked you who was funding this IREXIT group. There is no churchgate or crowdfunding venue in Ireland, North or South, where they would be entertained. Like I have said on a few occasions, there has never been a topic in the past which has so united the peoples of Ireland. A 88 % to 92% pro EU poll is rather overwhelming. In the matter of a no hard border, , for which I am not aware of a poll, I suspect that it would be closer to 99% ,with the 1% being those smugglers currently involved in diesel fuel.
Unfortunately the prospect of a no deal does continue to rise.

Well actually OG both Tommie and that advisor have a point. At the time of the crisis ,there was no rule so following a rule or a principle was not an option. It was an unprecedented situation, and the demand that Ireland bail out a small private bank ,or guarantee its debt was bullying.
Why did Ireland acquise? Partially from fear of the unknown but also because our Minister for Finance was dieing undergoing medical treatment , and had not the wit to get better advice.

No idea but...
Among those involved in the establishment of the Irexit Freedom Party are Ray Bassett, a former Irish ambassador; and Ray Kinsella, a UCD professor. Hermann Kelly, a former journalist and now head of communications at the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy group of MEPs in Brussels, will be the party’s spokesman.

Thank you. Ray Kinsella is not professor any more than am I ,we are both retired. But the current Professor from TCD ,Lucey has an very critical analysis of his speech introducing the Party.in 2017. But from my ignorance of the party, you can gauge its importance in the Irish political debate. It has sunk without trace.
H. Kelly is an associate of Farage.,so that is a likely source of the money.

Expose of the Brexit supporting right wing so called "Think tank"
The institute of Economic Affairs
https://www.opendemocracy.net/uk/brexitinc/adam-ramsay-peter-geoghegan/right-wing-think-tank-accused-of-promoting-tobacco-oil-indu
Right-wing think tank accused of promoting tobacco and oil industry “propaganda” in schools
The Institute of Economic Affairs’ magazine distributed to tens of thousands of British schoolchildren promotes tobacco tax cuts, climate change denial, tax havens, and privatising the NHS – but doesn’t say where its money comes from
The IEA, a registered educational charity, sends copies of the magazine EA free of charge to every school teaching A-Level economics or business studies in the UK.

The influential ‘think tank’ does not disclose its funding but it has received money from British American Tobacco, oil giant BP, Jersey Finance, gambling lobbyists and right wing US foundations pushing to privatise the NHS. While articles on many of these topics have appeared in the IEA’s schools magazine, it does not disclose these financial links.

The IEA has also argued that Brexit could be a boon for Britain. Its head of international trade, Shanker Singham, recently accompanied pro-Brexit MPs including David Davis on a trade tour to the US

Somehow I don't think the 52% who voted for leave knew what this lot want to impose on them!
"Charity" seems to be the cover of choice for fascist organisations now
Great Ploy !
It kids the proles it's intentions are charitable, and avoids paying Tax.

Do we get American Citizenship too? we may as well as they intend us to be an overseas territory, an unlike our useless government have been beavering away in secret since July 2017.

If we leave the EU it will only be to be snapped up by the USA instead,
So much for "Taking back control" and "Becoming a World leader in trade"

Maybe it is that simple .. Leavers BELIEVE that the EU is a prison. Now what caused them to have this belief?. ,When the facts do not support it?.
It's not that hard to make a case either way. The longer I am following this thread the more I see that.
