The Bullies in charge of the playground were the victorious side in the WW2. ... China was not included. And of course soon afterwards they were the guys with Nuclear weapons. That India is not now included is a travesty ..but you see where that leads ..
China was added to the initial five later, but that is irrelevant to the important point I was making, that a select band of powerful members having a veto on action renders the organisation impotent, just when it is needed the most.

There should be no right of veto for any country.

2) The United Nations should be the deciding and enforcing body, but it was emasculated when it was first set up by the USA who refused to let the rest of the world set it up in neutral Switzerland and also insisted on the right of veto by a small select band of powerful permanent members, China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States.
The UN can expel members.

"A Member of the United Nations which has persistently violated the Principles contained in the present Charter may be expelled from the Organization by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council."

All it needs to do is to remove the veto that the permanent members have.

That is the built in problem I've highlighted, that recommendation. Russia in the present example as a permanent member of the security council will veto any such recommendation for its expulsion, also any attempt to remove that right of veto, and no doubt China would also veto them.

Having been set up with that veto for the permanent members of the security council, the General Assembly is permanently locked into impotence on the most important issues.

It's a repeat of the failure of the League of Nations pre war, a flaw in its initial setup.

No disagreement from me on this topic . Ireland has been an enthusiastic member of the UN since its inception. ..And of the League of Nations before.

More than 5m items of medical supplies have been given to Ukraine, helping to save tens of thousands of Ukrainian lives, the UK government is claiming.

Since the Russian invasion was launched, 13 flights carrying ventilators and other medical supplies have left the UK. Lifesaving medicines, intensive care equipment and wound packs have been donated by NHS England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The UK’s health and social care secretary, Sajid Javid, has said:

The appalling atrocities inflicted on the Ukrainians by Putin’s evil attacks are causing untold misery to millions of people.

The invasion has created a medical emergency and the UK has acted swiftly to give our Ukrainian friends the medical support they need which has helped save tens of thousands of lives.

Are these the ones that were out of date or rejected by the NHS on numerous grounds?

Even if they were, they are still much better than nothing....

Quite possibly so.

But the kudos is somewhat diminished if they were otherwise due to be incinerated. It ends up helping them to get away with the mistakes (being polite) which caused the PPE to exist and to be here.

I rather expected this. (I know I said so somewhere, but can't find my post here.)

Great idea. Perhaps they could give it to Andy to do some more, er, "lobbying"?

The Queen at her age won't be interested. Given that Charles wil be taking over from her and his environmental attitudes, I doubt he'd be interested. Especially with his dislike of modernity and preference for the traditional, I can just imagine his look of disapproval of the appearance of that yacht.

The old Royal Yacht Brittannia was much more his style:

Just what do the Russians expect... ?

Russia has accused Ukraine of sending attack helicopters across the border to strike an oil storage facility in what would be the first raid on Russian soil since the outbreak of the war if confirmed.

Ukraine has not confirmed that it launched the attack, raising questions about whether Russian negligence may be to blame.

A Russian governor in the border region of Belgorod said that early on Friday two Ukrainian Mi-24 helicopters crossed the border at low altitude before firing rockets at an oil facility 25 miles from the border.

If the oil is being used to supply the Russian military within Ukraine, then it would appear to be an obvious and legitimate (within the awful logic of warfare) target.

that's the simplest way to inform the Russian public the reality of Mr Putin's war.

Except it immediately gets spun as Terrorist Attack by Nazis on Peace loving Russians. There was a chilling interview on the BBC Hardtalk two nights ago. The target was a Russian Duma MP for the district of Kirov. Her English was excellent. In a previous life she had been a journalist . So if anyone in Russia shown be well informed it was her...
. Suffice to say, that the most Trumpian of Antivaxx zealots was not a patch on her invincible ignorance. Everything related to the War was lies and propaganda. ..There was no Hospital bombed in Mariuople, it was occupied by Azov for the last two years Russian soldiers are not shooting at civilians, all pictures of destruction are staged. ..it went on and on. Only 20 Russian soldiers have died..but when that was corrected ,by the interviewer, she was prepared to concede in her constituency.

The very fact that we see people questioning the veracity of reports from Ukraine and Russia - here and in many other parts of our media - is a positive. Not when they just shout "Lies". But when detail is examined, even that information is published with the "we have not verified this independently". It does suggest that the most egregious untruths are likely to be uncovered.

Maybe sabotage by the Russian branch of Extinction Rebellion, just heard they are targetting several oil depots here too. ;)
