Well, it was good to see that Lipsius wasn't dismissed completely out of hand. I guess I've gone from shocked, to angry, to dismayed to where I am now which is resigned. I can see Lipsius's point of view which is basically about perspective. Maybe time for me to at least try to stand back from this particular cause. I admire those people who are challenging the new status quo. Recognise now though that's not my thing. I think that maybe as this plays out, the best thing is to try & handle it as rationally as possible. Sometimes being on the sidelines gives a much broader view, at least for now.

Standing in the middle of the road is always an option of course, but remember the words of long departed Aneuran Bevan.
"We know what happens to people who stand in the middle of the road.
They get run down."

End the day with a laugh
"
Russian ambassador mocks Boris after just one protester turns up at embassy"

Sorry but I'm having another all too frequent bout of hysterical laughter:D:D:D

And this pretty much sums Boris up, the world will at least find something we did insanely funny
This man has done more to make us a laughing stock globally than just about anyone in our entire history.
Appointing him Foreign Secretary was truly inspired!
Sorry World, we were kidding!

I think we're talking more about standing on the pavement whilst the two cars hurtle towards each other in the road. But I take your point.

I couldn't believe that I heard Jeremy Hunt on the TV this morning....he clearly said that we would allow the best immigrants to maintain the NHS and we should stay as a member of the single market to look after our producers....isn't that the absolute opposite of hard Brexit favoured by Davis?
If the cabinet don't have any idea what Brexit means how do they expect parliament and the rest of the country to understand government policy.
Also I am amused that Amanda Rudd accused Hammond, our chancellor,of acting like an accountant!!!!!!!
Absolute Mayhem.

It is becoming increasingly clear that so called soft Brexit is not going to be a possibility,we are going to have a hard Brexit or forget Brexit, the middle ground is so complex as not to be possible within the time scale available.
Nick Clegg was advising that hard Brexit under WTO rules could put massive tariffs on us....40% on New Zealand Lamb,59% on French cheese....these are massive price rises....nobody surely would welcome such tariffs.

one way or another inflation is going up, lots, and neither wages nor interest rates are. so consumers will have much less and spend much less, as will savers. so far domestic consumption staved off recession, but it wont remain the case. But I'm afraid all those xenophobes need to experience this to recognise they live in an interdependent world.

It looks like May is proposing to 'bribe' the EU with billions in payments so that we retain access for some important industries, banking etc
I know lots of people who voted Leave, especially old people, who specifically voted Leave believing Boris's returning £350 million per week to the NHS....the tally of compensation gets bigger,Brexit is going to be very expensive...
We appear to have guaranteed Nissan for any tariff losses.
We are going to compensate the farmers.
We are compensating the research universities.
We are bound to compensate Scotland as a bribe to keep Sturgeon quiet.
and now it looks like we are going to continue making payments to the EU plus the 18 billion we have already agreed as balance payment to leave the EU.
The final kick is that whilst we are exiting the EU we still have to make payments to the EU budget, that has just got 20% dearer because of the weakness of the pound.
No wonder Hammond and the Treasury are unhappy, this could all prove ruinous for our country....still keep saying it....Brexit means Brexit.

You have missed some rather significant Additional costs
  • We need a huge database and administrative structure to control immigration
  • We need to provide a credible border force to police 7,500 miles of shoreline
  • We need a small army of trade negotiators to find new markets
  • We need to re-industrialise the country to have any hope of survival
  • Taxes will need to be sky high to do even one of the above, never mind fund the EU debts.
There is a simple and elegant answer to all these problems
Throw the whole Brexit idea into the dustbin where it belongs

These costs could be avoided with a little patience. All we have to do with hard brexit is to wait five to ten years when the poverty stricken UK will no longer be attractive to any immigrants.

The European Union
From the Guardian:

That said, there is a lot of guff talked by some in the leave camp about how being unshackled from the EU will enable Britain to break into markets that have hitherto been closed. The notion that Britain has been prevented from exporting to China, India or any other part of the world by Brussels red tape is disproved by one seven-letter word: Germany.

Maybe because they make stuff to export?

Daily Mail Today
"Opposing Brexit should be made TREASON and punishable by LIFE in prison, Tory councillor demands in a bizarre petition to Parliament "

And he found more than 900 more idiots to sign the petition, and the usual rash of comments from the readership make me wonder whether I was wrong to maintain that Brexit voters were misled, clearly the examples making comments agreeing with him, are much, much worse than that.

Exactly the point I've made much earlier in this thread,

Germany's secret is fourfold:

They are disciplined.

They work hard.

They innovate.

They produce very desirable products.

We in the UK fall down on points one, two and four, and many companies also fall down on point three, thinking what was good for grandad is still good enough for today.

And they still under estimate the resolve of the British population.
well inasmuch as "resolve" means "making a commitment" - as opposed to "carrying it through", no. Brexit certainly proves they have certifiable, insane, "way to commit soldier" in the penguins of Madagascar sense levels of commitment
