Brainpower S866 external speed sensor

Hi, I've recently fitted an s866 lcd and controller to my voilmart 250w geared hub. However, I can't get a speed reading when coasting. This means it only measures trip distance when the motor is engaged. I've tried a hall sensor wired to ground, 5v and signal to white wire but no difference at all. I gather this is a common issue with geared vs DD hubs.

Anyone had any luck?

You have to set the number of magnets to 1 in the settings: P07=1

Hi, thanks. I tried setting p7 to 1 (amd many other variables) but had no luck. It picks up a speed reading if i turn the wheel backward this engaging the clutch. I still have a reading when only the phase and no hall plug is connected.

That's interesting. I always thought that it used the hall sensors when there's no independent speed sensor. Did you check that your speed sensor is working by measuring the signal on the white wire with a voltmeter?

Yes, but I have a constant 5v on the white wire on the hall plug. By way of an experiment, I've disconnected the 5v constant from the white hall and added a hall sensor with a magnet. I get 5v everytime i pass the magnet over the hall. I have wired this into the white and ground and a 5v supply and no difference at all.

I'm thinking it's time to get a bike computer. It's a shame this S866 can't calculate spedd when coasting wiith a geared hub.

It can. Loads of people use it without any problems when they set it up right. I don't understand your first paragraph.

Take the white wire from the controller and measure its voltage to ground to see if it's held high or low. If it's high (5v) tap it on a ground to see if you get a speed reading. Tapping at about 1 to 2 taps per second should be fine. If it's low (0v) tap it on any 5v. If you don't get a speed signal, there's somthing wrong with your settings. if you do, there's something wrong with your speed sensor.

I have 5v on the white hall wire into the controller. Tapping this to ground a few times a second still gives no speed reading whatsoever. My S866 settings are as follows -

P1 =3
P2 =1
P3 =36
P4 =5
P5=1
P6 =26
P7 =1
P8 =100
P9 =1
P10 =0
P11 =2
P12 =5
P13 =8
P14 =20
P15 =29
P16 =31
P17 =0 (have tried no 1)
P18 =100
P19 =1
P20 =0000

Update -

After reinstalling my controller and altering the parameters, I now have a speed shown when coasting. I've no idea what has changed so I've made a note of the working settings.

I've just tried changing 7 to 1 and it now seems to work while pushing so fingers crossed, popping out soon so will test it.

Most bikes only use one magnet for speed sensing so logically the only setting can be one, the odd Bafang hub has 6 internal speed magnets.

Yes, Thanks it seems to be working. I just set it according to the instructions with the controller which was amount of magnets x deceleration ratio which = 104. Happy at 1 it's all working now
