Bottle battery, fall and frame damage - repair ?

Morning all,

Had a bit of spill today – only at around 10mph and in my employers underground carpark. There are patches of black paint that for some reason turn to Teflon when wet. I even know about them. Still, this morning front tyre touched clipped some as I turned and I hit the deck. Trashed my goretex trousers – probably repairable though will never be the same.

Some other minor damage to both myself and bike but the major thing that concerns me is the Bottle battery holder. It’s a brand new, new style one from BMS battery (12.5ah version)

The mass of the battery in the fall has torn the lugs/holes in the frame out. I can think of possible repairs including epoxy putty and similar but should I be concerned about the integrity of the frame itself ? The frame is a On One and is steel

Thanks
Kirstin

Glad to hear that you aren't badly hurt.
Depending on the damage to the holes, could they be tapped out for some sort of helical coil fitting, as per spark plugs? Goodness knows who you would go to to get it done though.
As for the overtrousers, you can get goretex patches that work well. I have a jacket which I patched years ago and which is still seeing good service, albeit a little scuffed!

Have you thought of trying Rivnuts?
Being a steel frame I would not be too concerned.
I dislike the idea of suspending that much weight on bottle mounts, at the very least wrap some hose clamps or similar around it if possible.
Glad you are OK.

Good Luck

Glad to hear you are (almost) ok.
If the nuts have torn the frame at all yhe best fix would be to get the holes welded up completely then redrill them and fit rivnuts.
If possible it might be a good time to try and sort some extra support for it as well.
I would also put the battery somewhere safe and fireproof and set it to charge up whilst keeping an eye on it just in case its caused some internal damage.

Thank Kinnivie

re battery, I'm hopeful the battery is fine as i hit the floor with both bike nad battery landing on me. The battery didnt hit the floor - just me and I'm a whole lot softer than concrete !

still I'm not risking charging at my desk today !

Sounds good then,a battery is expensive but you can be fixed up on the NHS for free ;)
Its been foggy and wet here lately so not been out riding but the suns peeking through now so think I will get out while I can.
See you on Strava..x

I filled and fixed the lugs with a n epoxy resin then reinforces the battery mount so it is tied in three more places (as well as initial 2)

Funnily enough the wife said same thing re nhs!

Strava- I'm not very good at it other then ride logging so dont take offence if I miss anything

I struggle to keep up with Facebook and forums, no space for more social media !

Sounds good.
I think extra support should be the norm with these batteries,2 bolts designed to hold a pop bottle does not inspire me with confidence to hold £300+ worth of potentially explosive chemicals

you could as suggested go the rivnut route, when I first got my kudos vita with bottle battery I removed battery and secured the holder with cable ties and also used a Velcro strap from wilkinsons (wilco) to go round battery and frame.

screwfix do some hefty cableties 500mm long x about 9mm but 12£ for a hundred ill find some other uses for them
