Bosch motor failure

I have no issues with the people who sold me the bike, the dealer who is now repairing the bike and KTM.All have been very good , open etc with service times and parts availability.

What I am concerned with is the fact that the drive unit has failed after less than 500 miles of easy use ....... My wife has a powerline system on her bike ( purchased at the same time ) and worried that reliability may also be an issue with hers.

I was in the process of purchasing a third KTM with the cx drive unit for serious off road use and a Nyon unit to retro fit on my broken bike ........ but are now having second thoughts. Will wait to see how my repaired bike turns out..

Also this is in compliance with consumer law:

Legally, you have a contract according to the Sale and Supply of Goods Act, and that contract is with the retailer, the person who you paid your money to, and not the manufacturer. Any rights that you have against the manufacturer, such as a warranty, are in addition to your legal rights in consumer law, and so you don’t have to rely on that. Your first port of call should always be the shop.

the bike/ Ktm and Bosch provide a manufacturers warranty so I can take it to ANY authorised KTM/Bosch dealer for warranty repairs....

I sent a second email to Bosch expressing my concerns over reliability of the drive unit but they haven't replied. :(
 
As has been said by others, please don't expect a reply from Bosch, they will simply forward on your email to the dealer who is handing your case.

Bosch are just another step in the supply chain, I doubt they manufacture the bearing itself, so the issue will be passed up the chain. From you, to retailer, to Bosch, to their supplier and then upwards to their supplier etc etc.

However we and other brands sell literally thousands of Bosch motor equipped bikes into the UK and as with any product there will be a failure rate, but I have to say having worked in the bike industry for 25 years, dealing with Bosch bikes is a very pleasant experience. The failure rate is tiny and the back up and support they provide is great.

So I wouldn't worry too much, your motor will be replaced and you'll have many many happy miles of riding once your dealer sorts it out.

If you want to chase anyone please direct your questions and emails to the dealer, as they are the ones who are handling your case.

If you wish, you're more than welcome to email the dealer and copy us in, so we can monitor things.

Agreed, my post was just to indicate that KTM's statement about taking it to the dealer first also matched the consumer protection law.

I initially took it to another BOSCH dealer who said that I would have to pay postage to send the drive unit to Germany and return etc...They were unable to complete the repair as they didn't have the correct tool to remove the bash ring / combined lock ring on the drive unit - apparently its a KTM specific bash ring made of metal/alloy and the ones they has in the show room - GIANT / CUBE / HAIBIKE were plastic with a separate lock ring.

The dealer which is undertaking my repair is slightly further away from where I live but considerably nearer than the place I purchased my bikes from ( wife got one too :)

They were really good and started that repair the same day I took it in - although as previously stated they informed me that it could take up to three weeks..:(

I am a bit fecked off to say the least..less than 500 miles and drive unit failed is not good enough. I have emailed KTM and BOSCH to express my dissatisfaction.. I was going to purchase a third bike with a cx drive unit for proper off road use and upgrade the control units on out two existing bikes to NYON ...but now having serious second thoughts with regards to future reliability ......So in the meantime I have dusted down my Specialised Stumpjumper and are off up on the moors !! :)

Ok, thanks... so am I right in thinking you've not taken the bike back to the dealer you bought it from? Where did you purchase the bike?

A bearing can fail on any bike, and indeed the bearings on the Bosch drive are some of the most reliable we've come across in cycling as a whole.

Your motor will be fixed under warranty no problem at all and it should be turned around a lot quicker than 3 weeks, I think the dealer you've spoken too will just have given you a worst case scenario.

It happend on my Haibike Cross Pro 2015 after 2 months and 1100 km. It took only 8 working days to get a new motor from Germany.
Now it happend again after 13 months and 12.000 km.....
I`m still happy about Bosch and ordered a Haibike Cross RX 2016 with the CX motor. And 3 months ago I bought a new Cube 29'R Reaction Hybrid HPA Pro 500WH....fingers crossed...

As Tom from LEBC has pointed out we'd normally expect a replacement motor to be fitted and you be back on your bike within a week.

We'd also normally expect our dealers to lend you a bike whilst your bike was in for repair (if you needed a loan bike).

This is the normal practice for Bosch / KTM.

In this situation you've dropped the bike off with a dealer that wasn't the one you purchased the bike from, and I'm not sure if they are Bosch trained. They are mainly a road bike dealer for our brand.

I would hope there isn't a delay because you're dealing with this dealer, but if there is I don't think it'll be anything you can read too much into with regard to the future reliability of a bike equipped with a different Bosch motor.

Hi. They had several KTM Bosch equipped bikes in for service . They carry out Bosch firmware updates too.

They are Bosch / shimano steps and Yamaha trained mechanics .
I never asked for a loan bike as I have another bike ( without Elec) to use .

Thanks for everyone's input, very much appreciated especially the guys at FLI Huddersfield . I will feedback after I get my bike back

Sorry, too many beers tonight........yes still waiting for Bosch to send out a new / repaired motor .........The dealers have been very good I'm just flecked off it broke with little mileage on the clock....it's put me off buying a 2016 CX powered bike . I was also going to retro fit a nyon to it too...but again I don't think I will bother unless Bosch / Ktm offer me a sweetener as an incentive to buy one .?.

Picked bike up yesterday from ILKLEY CYCLES, WEST YORKSHIRE. New motor fitted....many thanks to Ilkley Cycles for carrying out the work - would recommend them. They did a great job and although they were not my supplying dealer they took on the work without any questions.

However.....thumbs down for KTM and BOSCH....a motor that failed with less than 500miles on the clock....

I contacted both BOSCH and KTM and they told me to take up the matter with my dealer....They didn't explain why it had failed , nor have they offered my any type of compensation / upgrades / vouchers/ discounts on equipment which I would have expected....I had issues with my car and was offered free servicing, my TV broke down as was given an upgrade to a better model.....CUSTOMER SATISFACTION / RETENTION ?????

So would I purchase another BOSCH bike ??? - Probably not. There there will be many on this forum who will disagree and will have had many miles of faultless use of their BOSCH equipped bikes but .....to basically fob off an end user customer back to the dealer without any explanation is bad practice....
