Bosch computer (HMI) not charging

Hello everybody and thank you for looking.

I've had a Bosch Intuvia Active Line propelled e-bike for two years now, just a couple of months over the warranty period. Lately I have been experiencing a problem with charging of the HMI unit.

1. Most of the time the HMI unit seem to work fine, displaying all the information needed.
2. The unit's battery doen not get charged (even discharge?) when attached to the socket on the handlebar (the main battery being full). When empty the HMI unit would shut down.
3. Attaching it to the socket the HMI unit will not turn on.
4. The only way I could turn it on is by charging it via USB. This way I can fully charge it and the unit (and the bike) would be functional for +- 20 km until it shuts down again.

Any good ideas?

I would suspect dirty contacts between the intuvia and it's mounting plate. ..causing it not to charge. Since the other functions seem ok , might be limited to only one contact. time to take out the brasso.
Otherwise it's a more expensive job. Defective charging circuit in the intuvia or defects in the cables coming from the motor.

Don't know. My suggestion about brasso was not flippant. Suggest a tiny amount on a tissue and then remove the grease lubricant with alcohol say vodka or white spirit or nail varnish remover again with a little tissue

The battery in the hmi is supposed to be rechargable, and açcording to the op açcepts a charge for up to 40 minutes operation. .via the usb port .. Not sure but that seems a bit low to me... And I have no inclination to switch on my own for 40 minutes to confirm.

I do not believe that the button battery is rechargeable.

There is reference in my Bosch handbook to a lithium ion rechargable cell in the intuvia. If there was not how could he get 40 minutes usage? .
Button cells are not usually rechargable however. If there is one it could be used to retain the memory contents of say the clock and the odometer.

All of the data that appears on the display, when the bike is on, comes from the motor. The button battery is not rechargable to my knowledge.

I have just checked on line and there are lithium ion rechargable cells in the button format. Voltage the normal 3.6 v but didn't get amphr rating, so from their size, perhaps 40 minutes is not unreasonable. Other versions from Panasonic etc are 3 v and depending on diameter and thickness eg 2032 can be 40 to 100 mAhr.

It would appear to me that data for the hmi does probably come from the motor on a serial link, and the motor communicates with the battery also. . But the intuvia remembers the data and can display it even after being removed from the bike. .. it just doesn't get updated. It would be interesting to see if the odometer would change when the display is removed. ...
