Bosch Active line clicks

The Active line motor in my Cube SUV gives an occasional loud click. It may be the Alfine hub, but I have been careful to ensure I stop pedelling before shifting gear. Any ideas what the cause may be?

There was a well-known clicking problem with the previous Bosch motor.

But the later version - yours - doesn't suffer from it, so I doubt it's that.

There is a knack to changing gear on an Alfine/Bosch ebike, particularly at higher assistance levels.

Rather than stopping pedalling, 'soft' pedalling changes works better.

Thanks, I will try that tomorrow. It kind of seems to be linked to gear changes as it was much worse when I rode normally and kept pedelling through the shifts.

Another way to investigate it is to turn the motor off and do a few changes unpowered.

Which Alfine is it?

I have an 11 speed and have found it not to be Shimano's finest effort.

It's certainly not the budget Rohloff they claim it is.

Good idea Rob, also on my list for tomorrow, mine is the 8 speed.

Got to say great to be on a forum with such quick replies, I am grateful for your help.

The eight speed, while not the premium product, is known to be all but bomb proof so is the better choice for an ebike.

Having read more about the Alfine hub I think I am experiencing "slipping", hopefully just because it is new and will bed in after a few more miles.

Having done quite a few more miles with the bike this is what I am sure of so far.

It occurs with the motor switched off, less obvious but still there when under load. It is more pronounced in Turbo under load. You feel it through the right hand crank and the "Click" seems to resonate in the plastic housing of the Bosch motor.

It is not restricted to during or just after a gear shift, and can repeatedly occur every few pedal strokes.

I have been turning up the cable tension, which seems to be improving things, but the yellow marks on the hub are no longer aligned!

I suggest you get those lines back in line, it seems to me from your description the issue is with the Bosch motor and nothing whatsoever to do with the hub, so why would you mess with it?

I believe the hub is slipping, the corresponding "shock" is felt at the other end of the chain - at the crank. it would appear to be not uncommon for the alignment marks to be not ideal and I am suspecting this is emphasized by the extra torque of the motor.

I will persevere with the hub adjustment until I have ruled it out or resolved it. Then it will have to be an ebike shop to assist as I can't do anything with the motor.

Do you know how to adjust the hub so the green lines are lined up? If so, how are you going about it? I had the same issue and I thought the hub was broken. It's totally fine since I lined the green tabs up a few times. It's a great hub..!

Yellow alignment dots on my hub, aligned using the cable tension adjuster on the shifter. Doesn't solve the problem though!

Hmmm. That solved my slipping issues. 1sr gear to 5th then back to 4th and the lines are lined up (perfectly) then it sounds like the issue is elsewhere. Worth a mention though!

My first Nexus 8 hub (same internals as Alfine) was a bit rough at first, it then went on to develop a momentary loss of drive in 8th gear. The internals where replaced under warranty and it has done over 6000 miles without any issues now, it was also much smoother right from day one. It's never needed any cable adjustment since initial set-up.

Talk about a storm in a tea cup! Turned out to be the plastic crank wheel guard interfering with the chain. I can't explain how relieved I am it wasn't something more serious.

I failed to spot it and I do consider myself capable with bikes, but J E James in Rotherham did a sterling job in identifying it and refused to charge me for their time, bearing in mind I didn't buy the bike from them I consider that above & beyond. They have won my loyalty that is for sure.

The 7 mile journey home over numerous hills was an absolute joy as this time there was no click/clack to accompany me :)
