Magura are contracted to provide Bosch back up and warranty. All training is currently in German only as we have asked. Happy to ask question once English training becomes available as we are looking to book on to this once courses are added. In addition we will be ordering parts from Magura soon including the diagnostic kit!
May be Martin can answer your question?

Does that mean that no one in UK can change readout on HMI from KPH to MPH. I bought my AVE XH3 from Cycling made easy who phoned importers who stated that they were waiting for training course and equipment from Bosch.
Seems customers are being made to wait way too long for Bosch to get their dealer network trained!!

Pretty sure you need diagnostic kit to change from km/h to mph on 2012 system. 2013 Bosch display can be changed from km/h to mph in a few seconds. AVE bikes currently have 2012 Bosch system new ones are coming in soon!

Hi there,

Just to sum up a few things..
The Bosch diagnostics kit is mainly used in the event of a problem.
It can obviously store, show and clear error codes. (Makes a problem easy to fix for us dealers)
Its also used to update the software, calibration changes etc etc.
It can also be used to run off a report of any bosch system (good for any new owners to obtain a report from a dealer as to the true history of the ebike)
The report that is run off is split into a number of factors.
Its split into sections.. Bike data, Motor, Battery, HMI etc etc.

It lists all the normal bits like, date of manufacture, model ID, software version, firmware version, battery capacity, battery usage, hours used, voltage, temperature etc etc.

Interestingly it also has a top speed parameter within this report... BUUUUT remember the way the dongle works.. it halves the speed sensor signal output. Therefore the system is still logging the same speed etc.

When pedaling the Bosch system (with the dongle plugged in) you have to double the speed shown on the display to gain a true mph reading. For example if you were actually doing 30mph the system would still only be logging 15mph.

Hope that answers it??

Oh and yes the 2012 system mph can only be changed with the diagnostics kit. Unlike the 2013 which can be changed by the end user as David has already said above.

Regards
Martin

Can you guarantee that it can't detect it?

I understand that the diagnosics kit has 3 different access levels for users IBD, OEM and BOSCH and that only the BOSCH level has full access rights.

From the Q&A section on the Bosch site they make it quite clear they do not approve of the dongle.

" Is tuning authorized?

There are various companies and individuals who offer a “tuning” or customized modification of Bosch eBike Systems, especially through the internet. As the original component manufacturer, Bosch eBike Systems strongly advises against using such products and services, or attempting to modify a Bosch eBike System yourself: there is a great risk of shortening your system’s service life, and of damaging both the drive unit and the bike. There is also the danger of negating the guarantee and warranty claims on the bike you purchased. In addition, improper treatment of the system will endanger your safety and that of other road users, risking accidents as a result of this tuning, as well as steep personal liability costs and even criminal prosecution. Therefore, Bosch eBike Systems calls upon all eBike riders and vendors to refrain from “tuning” products and services"

if the sensor records half the speed then the distance is also halved for the same battery consumption. Would the dongle make the system look like the battery capacity and mileage halved?

If Bosch has more access rights than us dealers then no I cannot guarantee they cannot see it.
The fact of the matter is that fitting the dongle technically will invalidate your warranty.
This is what both me and Bosch have expressed. Sold as 'off road use' and does state in the instructions that it invalidates your warranty. Its the same with anything. If you buy a Mercedes car, tinkering with the engine will invalidate your warranty. In fact with most things if you alter it from standard it will.

So with that in mind, I think if you are that wary, then don't buy a dongle and stick to the 15mph cut off. Or wait till your 2 years is up! ;)

I wonder if Bosch thinks the UK is still part of the EU?

Thanks for the reply Martin - I would prefer to see the warranty issue mentioned at the point of sale - similar to TETS when selling their Brompton conversion kit.

Thats not a very accurate comparison though is it... because tinkering with your car to get more power or speed isn't going to make the car illegal for use on the UK roads!

I am still a bit baffled by the fact you can double the speed without increasing the battery voltage, but I suppose there is a clue as the unit was based on a motor originally designed to operate on a 12v system.

The motor used in the Bosch drive unit is capable of very high armature speeds @ 36v, this needs to be tamed electronically to comply with the 25 km/h maximum assisted speed. Remove the electronic restraint, and it will go like the clappers!.

The MPF drive has an even higher armature speed requiring a 40:1 reduction gearing to stop it going supersonic.

It's just a PWM restriction in the controller, like how setting my speed switch to position 1 limits my speed to 16mph.
