Hi Every one

In a previous post I said I had bought a Bird E bike road bike that Is now discontinued.

I managed to wake the battery up without issues with the correct charger but it crashed after about 5 minutes riding..

I have found a battery service centre in London and visited them with the battery last week.

They have informed me the battery cells are all out of balance so far .

Just waiting to find out if any cell groups have failed or if the BMS is faulty the bike had only done around 200 miles from new and was returned to Halfords under warranty.

If it‘s the case that the cells are ok and the BMS is at fault.

Does any one know if these bikes ie battery and BMS are linked by an electronic hand shake to link them ?

I am trying to work out if a standard BMS will work with the controller if it needs replacing.

The Bird Charger is a standard two wire charger so no Canbus in play there..

Cheers

Baz

Not an expert, but there are numerous battery repair vids on youtube, at least one i have seen has noted a bms powered by a single or only a few of the cell groups which when left on the shelf will disproportionately drain those selected cells having the knock on effect of an unbalanced pack after 6 months plus..

the simple test for battery coms complications is the inclusion of extra non power wires connecting to the battery pack. a simple coms free battery will have a simple 2x wire/pole connector.

Look at the wiring between battery and the rest of the system. If it is just two big fat red and black wires then there's nothing clever going on, and any generic ebike battery will do.

If that is so, then the internals of the battery don't matter: any bms appropriate to the number, arrangement and chemistry of the cells will do. The rest of the bike does not care.

If the battery cable has more wires in it, then probably you are in trouble if the BMS cannot be used. Look at the cable, not just the connectors: some battery mounts have additional unused ways.

Morning thanks I will do that , I had all the internals out some months ago when you where helping me with the Carrera battery I will see if I can find the photos or have another look.
But if memory serves me I think just a Black and Red where coming out of the cells to the discharge port.

When I visited the battery companies workshops last week to have a look at there set up and work I discussed the Carrera battery you where advising me on .

They had boxes of the same cells so When I go back for the Bird Battery I will be taking that one over to them hopefully to repair for my own use With a standard replacement BMS that will work with my YOSE kit.

This company are doing some interesting battery builds for the London Rickshaw operators , I wonder how just 250W are helping they are making some large batteries for them .

Cheers

Morning I do look at you tube too but I find we have to be a bit careful like my recent post with regards to venting the cells that I blew.

I am going to hopefully work with this London based company and learn as much as I can if I keep buying ex display or other bikes with problems.

if you remember my posts on the Giant Fast road my wife claimed I finally found a 6amp smart fast charger new one from an online bike shop for £130.00 with the battery extension cable .
That seems to have worked out well £200.00 was the highest quote for the same charger !!!
