Bikes and the rain

I read my Kalkhoff manual which states that bikes should be covered with a bike cover when being transported on a vehicle (and battery removed). It highlights that water could damage the electrics. I'm interested in members practices when carrying the bikes on a bike rack. Do most cover or not? Just loaded my VW T5 for a trip tomorrow quite a fuss putting a cover over 2 bikes. Maybe there's a way of covering just the key parts?

Its not going to be much good too ride in the rain if you have too cover them too transport them
Surely thats just over cautious rubbish
Especially on the back of a van were there not getting a direct hit of water from travelling at speed .

Life's a bitch, then you die. Meanwhile in a parched wilderness somewhere, an emaciated child sucks at it's dead mothers breast desperate for some nourishment as it clings to it's last few hours of life. It's indeed hard in the first world. Putting a cover on your bike, how tough can it get ?
