Hi all,

Newbie here. I've not ridden a bike for ohhh about 30 years! Majorly unfit and overweight, so I want to get into riding a bike and a peddle assisted e-bike seems perfect.

Took a while to find one and I've purchased the bike above, simply because it's a chunky bike capable of supporting my bulk.

I bought it last year actually and well it's been gather dust, but I've not done a few miles on it and I actually really enjoyed it and excited to go back out again - I'm hoping that feeling remains , even got myself a helmet haha.

When I bought the bike, I asked the dealer is this road legal, to which they replied yes. However, have recently read further into this and looking through this site I am now unsure of the legality of riding this on the road. Does anyone know of a quick way of checking or if anyone knows that would be great.

can you provide links to the dealer and bike you bought?

If the dealer is a UK bricks and mortar business you should be OK..

Many bikes sold internationally have a EU/UK model or variant which is often legal some can be iffy, and some are simply not legal.

The basic regs are

#1 It should have an EN15194 sticker detailing motor and battery metrics and speed limit. (available on ebay)

#2 YOU want to look for an etching or stamping on the motor indicating its rated power in watts As long as its stamped or etched with 250w or less thats ok

#3 your battery should have a nominal voltage of 48v or less.

#4 your speed must be limited to 25km/h or 15.6mph No motor assist above this speed.

#5 The pedals must be rotating (being pedalled) in order for the motor to engage.

#6 no throttle beyond walk assist @ 4mph

Absolutely as thelarkbox says. I'm afraid that unless there is something very odd going on it is neither legal to ride on the road (unless you register, insure it as a moped, etc ), nor off-road anywhere accessible to the general public (whether or not it is registered etc; eg no bridleways, cycle paths, canal paths etc)

The rules relating to power are a bit strange, they refer to 'rated continuous' power where both rated and continuous depend on manufacturers statements rather than anything measurable. thelarkbox's #2 above is quite right; if the motor is etched 250w by the manufacturer it should be OK. Stickers on the motor don't count, too easy to replace.

Some unscrupulous dealers will sya anything to make a sale, some dont't understand the law and will claim anything.
If it is a 1kw bike derated to 250w then it is illegal and so any derating has no effect on it's rated power.
Simply the motor must be rated at a max 250w, however it doesn't mean one can't out put more then 250w from that motor.

Just looked at the Spec. of the XF 200 as well as the blurb and it looks illegal . With mudguards and a 250 watt Motor that would be a nice machine, especially as it has rear suspension . The black model would stand out less than say the yellow or red one if you were to ride it from home to the nearest Mountain !

The first obstacle you have to overcome is the motor. If it has anything other than 250w written on it, you're out. If it has nothing written on it, you're sort of OK. Next obstacle is the speed limit. You must set it to 15.5 mph. Lastly, independent throttles are not allowed, so if yours works independently, disconnect it. If your bike meets those three requirements, you should be OK. If anybody asked about your bike and you told them it was a 250w version, it's almost impossible to prove otherwise. I doubt that the police would care anyway. The main thing they check is the speed and any markings on the motor.

Also, just in case, make sure that there isn't a label on the frame somewhere that says anything other than 250w.
