Best helmet IF you want one?

No controversy intended. I've not worn a cycle helmet for over 60 years and respect the views of those who don't, BUT my best friend is in hospital with fractured skull after coming off.Makes we wonder whether to start wearing one after all, and if so what?

The honest answer is a properly fitted one. The most expensive in the world is hopeless if ill fitting

I suggest you go to a couple of reputable bike shops , talk to the staff, try a few on and then make your decion based on a good, comfortable fit

I am a firm believer in helmets - I've cracked two helmets in crashes. I firmly believe id have been killed or suffered a serious brain injury by one of those crashes without them on

I hope your friend recovers soon

Also consider a snow boarding helmet. Looks less Geeky, Warmer in winter, comes with detachable ear muff pads. Limited ventilation, which for cold weather, can be internally blocked with duct tape.

Plus one for a snowboarding helmet. They're more comfortable, give more protection, warmer in the winter and don't make you look like a tw@t, and most important of all, they don't let in wasps, which make you crash. The risk of that in the summer is higher than not wearing a helmet.

Another plus one for snowboard helmets in winter. That's what I use

In summer it is too hot so I use a BMX / skate style helmet

I agree with d8veh on the classic road bike style !

Excellent suggestion - I'll check out snowboarding helmets.

Quite frankly, the helmet I bought from Halfords (£20) is a piece of junk. The sun visor bit snapped off within the first week of use and now the chin strap has broken. I might be able to fix it but I'm thinking of just binning it and avoiding Halfords in future.

Thanks for good suggestions. Fancy the Lidl snow helmet. Hope it comes in soon.As an aside, anyone know what Michael Schumacher was wearing? Guess he was going a bit quicker than me anyway.

One word of warning on the lidl one - it's no good if you have a extra small, bald, pea head like me - just too big !

Perfectly good otherwise

His doctors did say he would not have survived if he wasn't wearing one. Though from reading between the lines I'm not sure how much of him has survived.

I bought a Bell Faction BMX skateboard type from the evil Amazon a few months ago. I got a plain white one not one of the technicolor yawn ones. It's fully bicycle compliant.

I see they have them for £15 at the moment with free delivery which is less than I paid and has to be cheap. I had Bell motorbike helmets which were supposed to be good years ago. Never hit my head with one though.

I would definitely go with the idea of trying some different ones on though before you buy as you will find the comfort very different with the differing fits.

Not selling these, but the Bell has very good adjustable liners to fit several sizes depending on which lining you use. I take a 59mm hat size and the large size fits very well with the thickest padding which it came with. The medium would also fit with the thinnest padding it came with but I preferred having the thickest lining.

Advantage of Aldi. You can try before you buy, and the size is rapidly adjustable by turning a knob.
Unless you have a pea head - I can easily fit a something like a deck of cards between the helmet and the sides of my head - the adjustment is more front to back

Who said they don't make you look like a tw@t.
I wear a standard Bell helmet and look nothing like a tw@t. In fact, I think I look pretty cool.
