Hi, I was wondering if anybody can recommend a BBS02 open locking spanner.

One that allows you to tighten the lockrings when the crank arm and pedal is on.

Thanks

I'm not sure that you can buy an open ended tool, that deals with both lock rings on one tool.

Years ago, when I first fitted my BBS02 kit, I bought a kind of open ended hook tool that allowed me to tighten the inner lock ring. I also bought a separate open ended tool that tightened the outer lock ring. Neither were ideal, as they tended to slip and I ended up with grazed knuckles. The outer lock ring tool in particular, didn't allow a great deal of scope for tightening, as it was too thick at one section to get enough clearance between the lockring and motor housing.

These days I use a full multi-purpose tool, like the one in the link, and just take my crank arm off when I need to tighten the motor, or gain access to some of the internals. A much better option IMO, and no more grazed knuckles :D

Bafang multi-purpose installation tool

BTW, a crank pulling tool is a handy addition for when you want to regrease the final drive!

Edit: I'm sure you could also get away with just removing the pedal and slip the ring spanner along the crank to tighten the lockrings.

My bad, it was the open ended hook tool that didn't allow much scope for tightening. It widened out too much towards the handle, for there to be much room for the hook to lock into the cut-out on the lockring.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have a closed one, I might measure the square taper width and cut a gap in each side / lockring.

I managed to dig out the tools I was on about, just to show you how awkward they were to use:

The inner lock ring hook tool was difficult to get enough leverage, as the shape made it awkward to hook on the cut-outs properly. The hook would slip out frequently, causing a few expletives.

The outer lock ring tool (and I was correct the first time) was just too fat in parts to squeeze between the lock ring and motor casing. This meant you only had a tiny window, where the tool was thin enough to fit on and turn.

The all in one tool that I use nowadays, just makes it easier, even after the requirement to remove the crank arm or pedal.
