Good day i am going to upgrade my battery on my e trike was wondering what governs the battery i can use the controller is 36 volt 17 amp and does anyone know what the maximum battery i could usei am thinking 36 volt 24 amph battery

There is no maximum capacity. The controller determines how much current the motor gets. Bigger Ah capacity just means greater range.

You don't give details of the trike, especially the electrics. If it has a proprietary system (Bosch, Shimano, etc) you need a matching battery. If it has a more generic system then many batteries may do. There is still the battery mounting and connection to consider. For example popular Hailong batteries come as frame fit or rack fit, and have 3 or 4 different connection styles (number of pins, whether round or flat).

I suggest you post some pictures of the bike, especially the current battery and battery holder, showing the connections.

Also whether you want a battery that will just fit, or if you are happy to swap around the mount as well as the battery.

I'm going to throw more into the equasion , if you controller is dual voltage 36/48v then upgrade to a 48v battery.
As it has been said as long as the voltage for the controller is correct then one can use a battery of any capacity, the more AH then yes the range increases (but also so does the charge time ).

A battery of the same voltage but of much greater AH will be heavier , how much heavier is dependant on the cell format used.
