Hi. Many thanks for both answers. They make sense. I didnt realise I had to keep pedaling.I will try the switch. Also, I will
check the motor with direct wiring just to check it out. Thanks

Also take a look to see if you can spot any brushes that an easily be released to check their length and general condition plus the condition of their springs. If they're sticking or have worn too short the contact to the commutator could be marginal which could explain the problems you're seeing.

Does anyone know where I can find an owners manual for this old bike as I suspect a large part of the problem is operator error!!

Can you ride it now without cutting out? From memory, you can get the manual from the Powabyke website, but you have to register first.

Hi all, I think I have narrowed the problem down to a fault with the A/P handlebar switch. When I play with the wire it works much better so Ill replace the switch.
