Of course the simple easy way to know the PAS ia working correctly is to simply support the bike clear of the ground , power the bike on and in PAS1 rotate the cranks by hand .

Yes I will try that, But I have just been told by a bike mechanic that if my bike has a throttle and also PA its not road legal. surely he must be wrong. he said if a policeman saw you he would stop you. I have also found quite a few cycle shops wont fix a electric bike unless it was bought from them. just seems a bit unfair to me.

My brother has an electric bike, and also it has a throttle and he has had it a good while now. He said to use his PA he has to turn a switch on for it to work. maybe I need to then as well. But I just assumed its all set up in the control panel on handle bars

Throttles are illegal unless the bike is tested and certificated at a participating mot station , though it doesn't stop many form using them. They do so in the hope that they won't e caught or prosecuted.

Your bothers bike is illegal as the PAS shouldn't have a switch to turn it on, PAS is the default mode for any electric bike under the terms of a pedelec/EAPC.

Cylce shops won't repair them (electrically) simply because they don't know how, as for not reapiring them mechanically then that is up to them and they are the ones losing out on revenue.

I am a bit lost now as how comes they can sell Electric bikes with PA and a throttle. if its illegal. surely that cant be allowed. there must be thousands of electric bikes with PA plus a throttle. I mean those riders working for deliveroo have Bikes with PA and Throttle, as I have seen them glide along with no pedalling

this is my bike

It isn't illegal to sell them; it is just illegal to ride them except under various quite rigid limitations.
If a bike with a throttle is old enough it can be legal (as long as it satisfies the other criteria), and others can be certified as Nealh said above.

he said if a policeman saw you he would stop you. That is not the case. A policeman is very unlikely to stop you, though he or she technically can. You are mostly only likely to get into trouble with an illegal ebike if you ride very very very irresponsibly, or if you have an accident. As you point out, there are lots of people riding illegal ebikes very irresponsibly and not being stopped.

It is illegal to sell them while claiming they can be legally ridden, but that's more a trading standards and sale of goods act issue. Many of us here think it should be illegal to sell them unless you have made it extremely clear to the buyer that they are not legal pedelecs. Some sellers hide 'illegality' notes deep in a web page where most people won't find them, others explicitly and untruthfully claim legality for thier bikes.

Just seems a bit stupid it’s legal to sell electric bikes with PA and throttle yet I was told by a bike shop mechanic it’s illegal to have a throttle

Well like Nealh said about bike shops will lose revenue because unless you bought the bike from that shop they won’t touch them. Bit stupid if you ask me as it’s not the electric part I wanted sorting it’s just to check the brakes and gears make sure they ok. As I have noticed my back brake needs tightening. I guess then I will have to start learning how to adjust brakes and gears. Just so stupid some bike shops as brakes and gears are nothing to do with electrics. And I’m sure most bike shops are fixing those mostly

As what you said Nealh about my brothers bike isn’t legal if he has to turn on PA via a switch. He bought his bike brand new I think it’s a cyclomatic I will
Ask him again what make it is

I didn’t think you had to turn on PA

Well I was just out on my bike, and I lifted the back wheel and cranked the pedals but couldnt see motor spinning But it works ok on throttle, and i cant see any wire off or loose. I am taking bike into my flat later to check it out more

Well Nealh it is true what my brother said about his Cyclomatic electric bike. he has a switch to turn on and off PA. mine is the same too as I have just realised on the G51 control panel if you press the PLUS + sign it increases PA to 5 as it was on 1, and if you look at videos below you can see PA is working now on 5, and if I say press MINUS - and so there are no marks on control for PA it turns it off, as you can tell by the wheel rotation

NO PA

NO PA ON CONTROL

PA 1 to 5

PA AT 5
