Hi, is there any validity in charging a new battery for 12 hours to throughly balance the cells.

I'm interested to hear answers on that. I charged ours overnight for the first several charges (20 maybe, I forget), probably around 12 hours. That wasn't to balance but for convenience and out of ignorance that regular overcharging could be a mistake. As far as I know that hasn't caused any problems; but then I don't know how it would have behaved if I hadn't done that.
A new battery is likely to need balancing, however this will happen over the first few charges if the charger and bms are left to do their thing.

Charge up the battery until you get the green light. Take it off the charger straight away, then measure the voltage on the terminals. If it's the same voltage as the charger, it's already balanced, so you don't need to leave it on the charger for ages. For a 36V battery, I'd say forget about balancing or long charging if it's 41.5v or above (42v charger voltage). Obviously, you need to measure the charger's output voltage too, not go by what's on the label. That will eliminate any measurement errors, so lets say 0.5v difference max can be allowed.
