i leave it to 3 secs to go + 2 sec for old server lag ect but check ythe bids and see how far back you are ;)
My late bid, or the bid ebay made late, didn't even register. There were zero bids recorded for the item I was bidding for - winter seems a good time to grab a bargain bike, prices are lower for the crap old bikes I'm after. Bit of a relief actually, would have involved a train journey to Sheffield to collect the first one. As usual, ebay bargains are freaking miles away with no delivery offered.

i fight robot bidders so no bids till last 5 secs then get 20 at once but a slow ping speed wont help.

my bit rate seems to drop on my wifi cams at night esp when its cold o_O

Not bid for anthing for a while now as I now have all about every thing I probably will ever need . My bidding was like yours and I put in my max bid about 30 secs to go, if left bidding to much later I'd be tto late.
I always left it to 3 seconds, 30 seconds is long enough for competing bidders to log into online banking, receive a 2FA code to their mobile phone to check their balance and have short arguments with their wives about a new dishwasher.

Perhaps this is one disadvantage of switching to Smarty (Three) for my home broadband via SIM router? Cheap (£20), fast enough, unlimited, no contract beyond 30 days, unrestricted, not traffic shaped, but this ebay bid lag is hissing me right off. I'll do some tests before my next attempt.

That's Royal Mail postal lag on mild steroids.

The auction for my next attempt ends on Wednesday - I'll have to bid because there's not enough time to grind the seller down psychologically, with many long messages telling him how rubbish every part of his bike is and how much the heap of shite will cost to renovate, and wear him down with repeated disheartening and depressing lowball offers, rejected despite increasing in 1p increments. I might lose interest in a hub drive conversion by then.

What are you looking for ?
I'm not saying which bike specifically, why increase competition? A sub-6kg folding bike which isn't a Brompton, which can have fat tyres installed and converted with either hub or mid-drive, for short hilly journeys to and from train stations. It won't be cheap, and the only reason I mentioned it on this thread is because of the troubling ebay lag issue which prevented me from grabbing a bargain twice last week. I suspect my outdated Firefox ESR is failing to load all newfangled ebay assets, will try Vivaldi, which still codes for Windows 7.

Look... I am sorry you don't like Ebay anymore, but please post it somewhere where it would be even slightly relevant. Y
Maybe try your Facebook or contact Ebay customer service. Here it is totally irrelevant and I am finding it disrespectful, because you are wasting my time.

I didn't say that. Top yourself so I don't see your unpleasant unhelpful posts.

Many bargains are on e-bay, but may only come at bargain prices if one manages to get in a last second bid.
So, yes, relevant to this thread. (A lot more relevant than many postings on many other threads.)

I'm lazy, so my strategy is to decide what I'm willing to pay, put in a bid on that early, and forget all about it till the auction closes.

I reckon bargains have moved to Facebook Marketplace, because it's cheaper for sellers and dodgier for buyers - harder to get refunded if paying by bank transfer, cash, or Paypal for "friends and family".

Interesting, it's about 20 seconds delay! I've just lost out on another bike! I was at the "Confirm bid" popup, gearing up to make my bid at 3s, when the auction suddenly ended about 20s ahead of time. Now that the auction is over, I can reveal I'd settle for a sub-8kg 16" wheeled Dahon Presto Lite. Preferably an SL, the version with derailleur. They don't turn up often, and when they do they're not as pricey as the extremely rare sub-6kg 14" wheeled titanium Panasonic Traincle.

"Current weight is 7.95 kg"

This dude encountered the same galvanic corrosion issue I had with the Helios BB:

Sounds intriguing. I do think it is a compromise sometimes between the weight of the bike and how robust / suitable for an e-bike conversion it is. I did think of a light road bike, maybe a 10kg Boardman and a light weight kit, after the advice here from more experienced members I think I would avoid a carbon frame / forks if I was mounting a motor there .

I do think weight matters with a folding bike that you are going to transport in trains or buses

I'd like to see ebay auctions work more like a real one. Bidding to close at a pre-specified time, or 1 minute (say) after the last accepted bid, whichever is the later.

Fortunately, my circa 22.41kg Helios has a handle when folded, and in large part is ok for heaving about on trains and buses, particularly with the battery removed and stashed in the rucksack... and for longer journeys, hauling trailers uphill etc. but a smaller and lighter folded electrified package weighing about 10 to 13kg would be nice, less bulky and cumbersome carrying bagged in shops. The 16" Dahon Jifo has a shorter wheelbase, and is overall a worse bike than the Presto Lite, else I'd consider that. Any folding bike has to be practical for use on our perennially pothole blighted roads. A Brompton can't have fat tyres without a fair amount of money thrown at it. This can be had for about £200 on ebay, disc brakes, but short wheelbase, and despite claiming to be "lightweight" weighs 12kg. Might be bearable to ride for 5 miles atime.
