Hi All

I am adding a Bafang bbs02 to my Scott mountain bike but because I ride on and off road I would really like this expensive add on here http://www.edibike.it/shop/accessori/corona-doppia-4248-denti-per-bafang-centrale-bbs01-e-bbs02/ . It's a 42/52 front chain ring but I have some basic questions if someone could help?

I have not touched my Scott bike yet as the parts are on order but it currently has a triple chain ring on the front and I wanted to know if I bought the double bafang adapter in the link above would I need to change my front Derailleur (Shimano Deore FD-M610 / 34.9mm) and snifter or could I get away with leaving them there to use with the double ring I want? To many of you this would seem like a basic question but bear with me please.

My bike specs are here
http://www.thebikelist.co.uk/scott/aspect-910

Thanks

On my GNG crank drive, I just drilled the original chain-ring and bolted another one to it. When I wanted to change from one to the other, I just hooked the chain over with a twig or something similar.

That was OK for occasional use, but I doubt that the bolts would have lasted a long time.

I reckon you could use the existing mechanism. Just adjust the cage stops to prevent the chain from derailing, if you accidently select the non existent third chainring on the shifter.

The chain-ring is already quite a long way from the centre of the bike. You might find that your derailleur doesn't reach the outer chain-wheel. You have to try it.

Hi all , I would rather buy the expensive double chain ring than drill things but it's hopefully that I might be able to use the front derailleur I already have. That would be my preference because it is already installed. I know that it can be adjusted with the screws but did not know if it would be impossible because it has 3 positions and not 2.

If it does not reach would there be others that would reach further?

You can buy ones with different reach, bit I don't know which are which. It doesn't matter that you only have two chain-rings. The end-stop adjusters will look after that.

I don't think it will reach, it doesn't on the GSM which is a clone of the BBS0, you will need a bracket or a long reach derailleur. I use the same method as d8veh except I have perfected it: I carry a glove in my pannier bag...

My double chain ring cost less than 50 € and I can change the size of the cogs as I please. The Italian one does look pretty though!

Do you know of any long reach derailleurs? Do you have a link to the double chainring you have as that is a lot less

I used the precialps spider and truvativ and shimano chainrings http://precialps.com/uk/20-accessories-bafang-bbs01-bbs02 they seem to be out of stock at the moment. I think they make a batch when they have enough orders.

I asked on here about the derailleur and was given a link to a mounting bracket that is used for fatbikes or other BBs over 73 mm wide. Can't find the post sorry!

Bit confusing compared to the Italian which is just "buy now" (bit of a novice thats the problem) . they don't seem to be selling the spider rings as they say "this product is no longer in stock"
Correct me if I am wrong but you buy the spider and then add a couple of rings on that you like and that's it apart from the derailleur?
Is the 73mm wide the magic number if I was to start googling it? or is there some other name I should be googling for the derailleur if I buy say the Italian one.

Can I keep the same shifter? Sorry so many questions but I will get there

Instead of trying to buy everything now, try it stage by stage. Your derailleur probably won't reach, but it might, in which case you don't need to buy anything. If it doesn't reach, you can change manually with a stick until you get a derailleur later. You just hook the chain from one chain-wheel to the other. It takes seconds. That will also give you the chance to check whether the chain-line will give any problems. It would be a right pain if you spent all that money on a new derailleur, only to find out that the chain won't stay on.
