nooky:confused: can forget about that! The Alexander technique along wih pain klllers is helping but I am disappointed that things seemed to be improving and just got worse again:(

Holiday in jeopardy, but will give it a few days to see if things improve......
Take it one step at a time and don't have expectations for immediate good results, it could take weeks/months.

Just keep chipping away at it day by day, then one day you will have forgotten about it and wonder where the pain went.

It's quite normal for the pain to subside then come back just when you think it's getting better - if your back muscles are guarding (tensing up), they will loose off each time you get into a comfy position/get them moving/massage relieving the pain, then at the first sign of a twinge they start guarding again making the pain worse - if my experiences are anything to go by it will get a bit better each time.

My dad used to use a tens machine - swore by the thing - it definatley works for some.

I personally prefer the option where my back is strong enough to keep everything where it should be - After about 6 weeks of the back exercise regime, if my back felt sore I could lie on the floor for a few minutes to relax and then tense my lower back and things would pop back into place with a satifying crack - used to get a look of horror from the Mrs when I did that :D

For the last 6 weeks my Osteo has been cracking my spine from the neck all the way down. I think I've become a crack junky :D

It's a kind of perverse pleasure - the crack, the brief spang of pain followed by bliss!

eddio,

I'm surprised no-one has recommended a physiotherapist. I'd rate that as even better than a chiropractor and way above an osteopath.

It is almost exactly 10 years ago that I put my lower back out. My GP said take aspirins and rest for 2 weeks, so I decided to exercise my health insurance and ended up with a private physiotherapist. She got me from not being able to walk to being back on the dance floor in four weeks.

The physio was able to tell me what I'd done to my back, how I'd done it, and what was really important, how not to do it again. And it works; those on the forum who've met me will know that I don't lead the life of an invalid.

Good luck with it, the chances are you haven't done any permanent damage and with the right approach you'll soon be over it.

Nick

I have used osteopaths in the past for back problems. walked in doubled over in pain and skipped out like a new born lamb....

But with this being diagnosed as inflammation of the sacroiliac joint I dont imagine they could do a lot more then what I am doing. And that is applying heat with a wheat bag and the back stretching exercises.

But will try one later this week rather then divorce if I have to cancel Thailand trip:rolleyes:

Sorry to hear your having back problem's. After 30yrs of of repeated problem's and surgery with more to come, I can fully understand what your going through.
Hopefully your problem is inflammation as you've been told and will soon pass without need for surgery.
Although all previous surgery has been to my lower back, the next will be my neck, sounds worse than it actually is by all account's.
Anyway, I hope things improve soon and don't worry about Thailand, I'll gladly take your place and you'll avoid divorce. One night of my snoring and your family will be on the next flight home. :)
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Tony.

go if you can...

commiserations... hope this won't stop your holiday, i'd offer to carry your bags.... but i've got a 'bad back' myself, had it some 30+ years, the result of a miscreant ramming his handlebar into my sacral joint 7 at 40mph.

like you, i have had times when i could not even get up to 'go tinky'.

have even put my back 'out' just sneezing, usually followed by 4 days horizontal nothing-ness.

things that have helped:

heated blankets under the affected area for short periods. - 2 hours max.

lying forwards across an exercise ball - make sure the ball is stabilised.

elastic waisted support belt - this really helps and gets you upright.

a chiropractor versed in the Bowen technique - this got my back stabilised.

Pallone ball chair - once my back was good, this has helped keep it that way.

hope you can get away, the break will do you both good,

best,

'Bad-Back' Beeps

Amazing just how many of us suffer with back problems! must be the number one complaint.

BTW Eddio, one of the things to avoid is tension, it only adds to the problem. I can`t remember how many times I pulled my back when lifting the cases to go on holiday:eek:
With the holiday looming it`s not helping. I remember once having a bad attack and at the time when my first wife was on a course of valium and I took a couple in desperation and it sure helped.

Valium is often prescribed as a muscle relaxant in cases of sciatica, the cause of which is often muscle spasm. For some weird reason valium used for this purpose doesn't have the problems of dependancy associated with its use for nervous disorders.

well my back is at last much better! probably because of our being stuck out here, when we should have been home over a week ago. average temps must be 37 C so what with swimming and a few massages and the heat the pain has ebbed away and feeling nearly normal!

hopefully flying home Sunday....all the best Eddie!

at least we are stuck somewehere cheap, a friend of my wifes is in new york and it is very expensive there....

Just don`t go lifting those cases on the way back without thinking first. Have a safe journey home mate.
