A NCX seat post is the answer to a lot of people's back problems, myself included.
Personally I have 2 and wouldn't ride a bike without one.
It's a subject that crops up quite often so a forum search should give you an idea of there popularity.

I’ve been considering one of these for a while. Could anyone tell me the height of the head from the saddle clamp to the bottom stop position? I’m worried it could make my saddle height too high. Can’t seem to find any dimensions anywhere.

According to this post the required seat tube to saddle rail distance is 110mm.
