Some time ago we discussed what was new for 2010. As I am on the look out for a new bike I wonder if anybody has taken delivery or knows when the new bikes are going to appear.

My own preference is for a low maintenance commuting machine, so I would like:

Alfine or 8 speed hub gears (fed up with changing chains and cleaning gears).
Disc brakes - preferably hydraulic (fed up with changing pads and now rims)
28 inch wheels
Some sort of suspension if the bike weighs more than 20kg (highly likely)
Battery capable of having a range of say 30 miles
I would prefer hub but I think the panasonic with the 8 speed hub would do.
Budget wise - I am after quality so I expect it is going to be in the region of £2000 (aghhh)

I know that 50 Cycles have some Sahels coming in (compromise on the 28 inch wheel) and will do a deal with the Cycle to Work scheme. Anybody any iideas on the availability of the new Wisper 906 Alpino (not the XC)?

Your preferences look the same as mine, I'm waiting on the Alpino to reach these shores. You might need to order one specially as I think they aren't going to be stocked in the UK.

Alpinos

Hi Guys

The 906xc Tourers are in customs I believe, if not they will be on Monday, the Alpinos will be here in four weeks.

If anyone is thinking of purchasing either a 906xc Tourer or an Alpino model, it would be worth reserving one, we only have a couple of hundred coming in on these first containers and demand is already high.

All the best

Only White for now

I could say "any colour you like as long as it's white" but I wont!! :)

As a matter of interest we can custom paint any bike for an additional £150.00, we can also put extra graphics on the frame, fun if like a lot of our customers you name your bike.

The wait though is 12 weeks+

The weight on the other hand is only a few ounces more than our 26" models.

All the best David

PS I hope you are feeling better.

The problem with reserving one is that we won't know we like it until the test ride. I am guessing the front dapush will make it very different to the 905 and as you know freewheel resistance can vary enormously between motors. I won't take anybody's word for it I need to test ride and see what the quality is like. I bought the original Ezee Torq without testing and while it was great I couldn't put up with the ride (amongst other things).

So where/when can we test ride? Also when will you be getting proper stocks in, for the summer or later in the year?

Hi HarryB,
We have the Gepida Reptila 1000 which is available already in the UK, The bike retails at £1599.00 and can be purchased from one of our dealers across the country.

I have provided a picture and specs of the bike for you to have a good look at.

The only 2 things that are slightly different from your wish list is, the Gepida 1000 does not use a hub motor, it uses the Yamaha crank drive system similar to the Panasonic system. The 2nd thing it does not have is disc brakes.

Gepida is a VERY good reliable bike with outstanding build quality and is a very comfy town touring bike.

If there is anything else you would like to know about the bike please feel free to ask any questions.

Regards
Aidan

Hi Harry

The 906Alpino seems perfect for you.

They will be in most of our dealers in 4 weeks now, if you would like me to hold one I would be delighted to do so. There would be no obligation to you to buy after you have tested the bike.

All the best

Sounds great. Can I reserve one please? I also need to check one of you suppliers can let me buy one under the cycle to work scheme. Apart from the colour and lack of hydraulics it seems a great bike.

PS are there any 906s in the country at all to test? I wonder which version Wired magazine tested?

Got the cycle to work scheme so confirming that reservation - looking forward to that test ride now. Is the £75 for both brakes by the way?

Hi HarryB,

I have just noticed you live in London, we have a couple of dealers over your way, who would be happy to show you the bike and arrange a test ride, we also have one of our Gepida bikes in Selfridges London, so if your passing pop in and have a look at the quality I am sure if you take a look it will give you a better idea if it is the sort of bike you are thinking of purchasing?

Hi Harry

Yes we will supply both brakes for £75.00 the front is very easy to retrofit the rear would need more skill.

These brakes are only available for £75.00 to owners of Alpino or XC Tourer Wisper bikes, one set per bike. We are heavily subsidising the cost, RRP will be over £200.00.

We are making this gesture as these brakes should have been fitted however Tektro are a little behind schedule with their hydraulics with electric cut out. All future Alpino's and xc Tourers will have them fitted, this will be reflected in the price.

The brakes on both bikes are currently the excellent Shimano Alfine with Tektro comfort levers so if you don't need the hydraulics I wouldn't bother to change.

Best regards

David

David, I have had a bit of trouble with the current Tektro IOx disk brakes overheating, wearing quickly and poor performance when wet* as the only pads available are mineral. Do the brakes that come with the 906 Alpino (cable & hydraulic) have a better choice of pad material?

*They are much better than the previous 905 brakes and much better than rim brakes in all respects.

that is it David,

I told you some of the parts you use are cheap, cheap as chips. When I worked in the bike shop Tektro was always the cheapest of the possible crap. That company has never made a quality product if remember well. All they tried to do was copying big brands but never with the success. Never improved and it seems to be the same these days.

As to your information if you walk in to Halfords you will all notice that Tektro brakes are fitted on the cheapest alloy bikes with the price tag of £200-£250.

Anyway I gave you already one hint which part really sucks the most on your bike.

take care

Alex

I've always assumed the reason why ebike manufacturers use brake levers by the likes of Tektro, Wuxing and Promax, was that they produce units with the integrated cut out switches required for use on pedelecs. Unless there's adoption of cable mounted (in-line) pressure switches or magnetic reed switches, then the choice of lever will be limited. As for the brakes themselves, I'd guess that it's far easier to purchase the entire braking system, than to put it together piecemeal, for the sake of compatibility as well as cost.

Alex, if you have something genuine to comment about then I wish you'd come out and say it, as perhaps your insight would be of benefit to all. Veiled sniping does get a bit boring to trawl through in search of a point. No personal offence intended.

Please believe me that I'm not trying to be at all partisan, my '08 Wisper had a few things that I've found cause to change, the reason that I've not felt the need to mention them here is that the company has made such improvements to their existing range to make any gripes I've had irrelevant to anyone considering the purchase of one.

Hi Alex

Hi Alex, thanks for giving me the opportunity to promote our bikes again!

I probably should not rise to your bait but feel I should make a final effort to convince you our bike are actually very good.

I will certainly restrict my comments on any further attacks you make against me and or my product.

Mussels has one of the older bikes I was talking about, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Tektro components indeed in my opinion (after several visits to their factory and others) they make a superb range of components from the less expensive to absolutely superb models. If you too had had the opportunity to test their range and the ranges of others I am certain you would not be making such comments.

There is nothing wrong with the brakes on Andrew's bike, it's just the pads that wear quickly. We have changed the pads now for a harder compound recently. I originally chose the pads in Andrew's bikes because of their high performance. However although they are superb at stopping the bike they are made of a slightly softer compound and therefore wear more quickly.

It is obvious that you have a real downer on Wisper bikes and I am sorry about that. I am also not so stupid as to believe that everyone will love my bikes, hwever using words like "Crap" hint to me you may be working for a competitor, I can't think of any other reason you would be quite so offensive.

Best regards

David :)

I should also add that overall my bike has been one of the best purchases I've ever made, and it suits my needs very well. I don't regret the outlay one little bit btw, particularly when thinking of the unfailing after sales support I've received.
