hello all recently purchased a 700c rear moter wheel as yet to be fitted to my spec sirrus.
as I have a 26mtb ebike, I thought that if in the future I decide to buy a 29e mtb I would just swop moter wheel etc onto the 29e.

whilst in local Halfords looking at the 29e mtbs they have, and asked will a 29e tyre fit my ebike 700c rim, I was told no it would roll of the rim?

however googling 700c and 29e they appear to be the same? or did the Halfords guy mean I could not fit as wide a tyre to 700c.

measuring my 26 mtb rim width and moter wheel rim width they are similar wider than my spec sirrus rims.

hence am a bit confused on this issue

thanks all

700c, 27", 28", 622, 29er are all the same thing in rim terms, only the overall diameter of tyres or measurement methods make the difference in naming.

700c overall tyre diameter in mm with a slim tyre. US and UK term.

27" is with a very skinny race bike tyre.

28" with a larger diameter utility bike tyre.

622 is the nominal rim diameter in millimetres. Continental term.

29er is just the name used for Mountain or Hybrid bikes using 700c rims. It's a fashion thing.

Halfords were wrong, not unusual.

A 29er tyre will fit a 700c wheel but 700c rims can vary in internal width, a sports/racer 700c rim could be as narrow as 13mm and a wide 29er would roll off that.
As I've been looking I was surprised to see that extra wide fat bike rims can also be referred to as 700c's

For the most part I've seen and used 700c rims with an internal width of 19mm. I'm happy with 2.1 inch big apples on 700c-19mm rims but if I run pressures below 30 psi I get side roll and if feals a bit odd/unsafe.

Mr Brown is a good source of information

much clearer now. my rim inner width is 19mm.
so I could use said moter wheel on 29e mtb
I think my mtb tyre is 26x 1.75 which I find ok for general use

That's no problem at all, one popular e-bike a few years back came with Kenda 700c x 1.95" tyres on 19mm inner rims. At 50mm tyre width, that's just over 2.5 times the inner rim width and it was completely stable.

If you look at the recommended widths on the chart below, you'll see that 50mm tyre would be ok even with a 17mm inner width rim. That's a tyre almost three times the inner rim width:
