Anyone out there running Solid Tires?

After my second puncture in as many weeks, i've now fitted solids, Greentyres, to my beasty. See Green Tyre - Puncture proof tyres manufactured in the United Kingdom

The simulated 55psi of my chosen tire results in a slightly rougher ride, and i'm told there's more rolling resistence, but its made up for with my new peace of mind, knowing i'll never have to worry about another flat. The initial harsh ride is also getting kinder with each trip. Either I'm getting use to it, or the rubber is getting a tad softer.

John in the other group said he didn't know puncture-free tires were still being manufactured. For those in the know, they can be ordered from Greentyre by your local cycle shop, £46 for the set - plus a dedicated tire lever. Expect some resistence. [I wont say anything about the stock trade in replacement innertubes, pucture kits and tires. This request will most likely be met by stories of the harsher ride and the difficulties of fitting the tires.

On this latter point, it is all down to technique. Once mastered it take barely two minutes and minamal actual effort. Just trust the rubber tire to stretch when it seems impossible. [says me after first having to sleep on the problem ]

I should say before fitting solids i also tried those foam tire liners you can get. These sit between the tire and the inner tube, and act as a barrior to any object penetrating the tire. No protection from side wall penetration, or mischeivous colleages deflating your tires

I am already fed up with my fabulous Wisper 905SE. fist ride, puncture after 12 miles.

Repaired, then 17 miles and another puncture, both back wheels.

I then brought and Armedila tyre for the back wheel and used reinforced stripping to protect. Wow and amazing 70 miles (35 each way), and another back puncture.

Sorry have to plug the event. Anyway, I really cant afford to pay for repairs and get stuck in going to or from work.

I really want to cover 300 miles a week to.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres are a proven way of getting punctures to an absolute minimum. I've used them for five and a half years on three different bikes, and with one week excepted when I rode across a layer of cut blackthorn with very long spikes, I've had no bike punctures in that time.

My cycle trailer using a wheel size for which there were no Marathon Plus has suffered more punctures in that time than I could possibly remember, showing the potential for punctures was there all the time.

Sorry to hear about your tyre problem, I have heard of a few problems but nothing quite as severe as yours.

I have to ask, are you riding on metaled roads or off road and have you found what has caused the punctures? Was there anything left in the tyre?

I have passed your message on to our tyre suppliers and have managed to get a couple of free ones for you which I will send to you in about 6 weeks.

I will post their answer to my email as soon as I have it.

here in vienna there are some 1000 of free bikes you can rent
(driving 1 hour is free, driving 2 ours costs 1 euro, ...)

so many people use them to get to work, and home
all over the city there are computerized stations where you can get and put the bike
(you have to be registered, but this is only needed once and can be done at each computerterminal within 1 minute)

the problem is: what happens when there is a flat..
to overcome this problems, this bikes have - besides of having a VERY robust and heavy steel frame and only single speed - solid tires...

well.. its not realy very comfortable, but i have to say: i have never driven a road-racing-bike, so maybe theses are also not very comfortable..

maybe its also the ombination of heavy frame AND hard solid tires ?!?


i personaly have gone to kevlar-guarded Schalbe big apple..
1.) low presure -> so does "overrole" some of the artefacts which would case puncture
2.) kevlar guard if nevertheless something tries to hit the tyre
3.) very very comfortable because i can drive with only 1,5-2bar instead of 4bar and they have twice as much air inside as normal 37er crossbike tieres

I have had a puncture on my back tyre of my Wisper 905SE after 3 weeks of ownership.

Have taken Fleccs advice and gone for a Marathon Plus. However the road tyre nearest my size 1.95 ( 26X1.75) is unavailable for 3 months

Have ordered a 26X2.0 ATB which doesnt appear too nobbly. Anyway a small loss in speed is far preferable to punctures ( have been without bike all week

Sorry about the delay in replying, only Just spotted this... ;-)

My solids are still going strong. The thread on my rear tires have taken
the most wear, but there's still some of the original pattern before it
gets to the rest of the solid rubber.

My bike is possibly the noisiest machine on the road, since harser ride
also translates into more vibration. There is also an element of caution
depending on the road surface. You don't ride along groves in the road,
just in case it 'takes the bike', instead you avoid riding along those
imperfections, or make the effort to ride across them. In that sense the
harder rubber can be unforgiving, or even dangerous.

That said most of my journeys have been without incident. As for what
proper tires would feel like after all this time, well, i can't imagine.

Thanks for the tip. Fourty five pounds is about what i paid for my solids. I'll bare your tip in mind, as i am toying with the idea of moving back to regular tires. Anything for an easy ride.

thanks for the tyre site ive now put 300 miles on my home built ebike and im sure will need some reliable tyres knock on wood no flats yet.
