Anyone planning on building a bike using the Bafang BBSHD motor soon?

Judging by the amount of torque this beasty puts out, a high quality bike with a strong drivetrain will be needed.

I'm just getting used to 750watt. God knows what BBSHD will be like.
The phrase 'greased lightning' springs to mind :D

I can't see the point of the BBSHD, as the BBS02 48v 25A climbs just about anything.

Many people use the BBS02 with stock factory settings, and don't realise that they are limited to just over half the available power.

I've reprogrammed mine to a limited 1000 watts, and it pulls like a beast. Admittedly, I have a custom 42T chainring on there too.

I have the 42t chain ring to a 12-36 cassette , 5 levels of PAS plus 100% throttle in all PAS levels. Up to now there is nothing I haven't been able to climb.

Yep, 42T is the way to go. The improved chainline helps too.

Just out of interest, was yours programmed by the vendor, or have you tinkered with the programming yourself?

Bought motor from EM3ev and I haven't changed any settings except 9 levels of PAS to 5.

Paul's a good bloke to buy from. Here's some stock settings that he usually ships the units with:

Note the ' Keep Current ' set at 60%, so you won't be getting all the oomph when using PAS modes.

I changed mine to 80%, to equal 20 amps or around 1000 watts in PAS 5. Works quite nicely in all PAS modes.
I don't have a throttle attached!

I don't have a cable or software to change anything yet. I find the throttle a great help in tricky off-road situations where you can't peddle.

Do you need a certain type of cable to change these settings and what type of software do you use to do it?

I'll be honest and please don't take this the wrong way. Judging by your other posts, you are just starting out in the world of electric bikes.

If I were you Cathal, I would build a bike using whatever kit you decide on. There can be a few pitfalls, even for peeps with good DIY skills.

Then, ride it around for a few hundred miles, discovering handling characteristics and ironing out any problems along the way.

If you then decide that you want to change any of the controller configurations, you could then tweak a few settings.
One can totally mess up a good controller by diving in too quickly with changing configs though!

Without any customising can you change the throttle from full throttle to variable depending on the amount of twist/push you apply

Not 100% sure what you mean here, but tweaking throttle settings normally means connecting a controller to a laptop/PC via a cable and using programming software.

Most throttled bikes come as standard with the ability to control the motor from very slow to top speed, depending on how far the throttle is twisted!

Ah that's good to hear, I've heard the BBSS02 has a throttle that goes instantly to full speed, maybe I've been misinformed.

The trouble with the BBSxx kits, are that depending which vendor you buy from, can depend on how they are programmed.

If they come with stock Bafang programming, then the throttle will act normally. If the programming has been tinkered with by the vendor, then indeed the throttle may act more like an on/off switch.

The controller's throttle characteristics are defined by how this page is programmed in the controller's software:

Again, not something you want to rush in to change, as it can mess up the rideability of the bike!

Good points, also I'll be able to change the settings once I get used to my existing unmodified bike as a nice little change later on.
