Hello.

I'm a cyclist, although not a frequent one, and I'm moving up to an electric bike.

I want to spend between £500 and say £800, and won't be doing loads of miles on the bike.

What I DO want, however, is a powerful battery, not for speed, but for distance. (I'm disabled, so don't want to be stuck miles from home with a heavy bike and no power assistance!) So what sort of bike could fit this bill, and do most manufacturers offer an uprated battery as an option?

Thanks.

Allen.

I have been looking at this price range and I just decided on the Juicy Sport which is £695 and available through the cycle scheme if that's an option for you.

They will be offering a 14Ah battery at the end of this month (which I think is £175 more). It is supplied with a 10Ah as standard. A spare 10Ah battery is only £195 so you could get 2 batteries and carry a spare on the rack if you wanted for only £25 more than the 14Ah battery!

The Alien Gents special was my other option at around £600....comes with a 10Ah battery and I'm not sure if they can supply a 14Ah or not.

Cheers,

B.

Thanks Benjy, that helps.

Still on batteries: is the Ah rating the key, rather than how many Volts? (I've never really understood electric drills either).

And off at a slight tangent, how do you make sure your battery doesn't get nicked when you've parked your bike in a public place? It strikes me that for something so small and expensive, it might be a problem.

It's the Ampere/Hours that fixes the range potential, think gallons of fuel in a car.

The newly announced FreeGo Eagle e-bike claims it's battery is a 16 Ah one, but we have no experience of it yet and it's twice your specified price area as so many are.

It's 10 Ah Eddie, and it doesn't look anything like an eZee, completely different frame geometry and battery appearance, rear instead of front motor, different carrier, different lower forks, different controller placement, mudflaps etc, etc!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Benjy,

Do you know if the Juicy can move on throttle assist only, or will it only assist when peddling?

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this bike after you've tried it out.

Peter: there are a few reviews of the Juicy Bikes in the review section
http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/electric-bike-reviews/3788-juicybike-owner-reviews.html
just in case they help.

Benjy: the bikes featured on the Juicy Bike site seem to be fitted with a more powerful one than the one you describe - it's got a 250W 36V - is that the bigger version? (Their site is okay, but doesn't go into much detail on technical points, like the type of motor, type of 'throttle' mechanism, the Ah ratings, and so on, so perhaps we can badger you with some more questions!)

The one I'm talking about is:
Juicy Bike Sport: electric hybrid cycle

Hi Allen,

I have done a good deal of research on the Juicy Sport....I have seen it and ridden it and have now placed an order for one on the cycle scheme.

Perhaps this previous post I made might help you?

http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/electric-bicycles/5893-juicybike-sport-alien-gs2-3-a.html

The Juicy sport has a 250W Bafang motor and a 10Ah lithium battery. It has a pedelec sensor as well as a throttle control so you can use it without pedaling which is great!

My wife has a Rush Trek and the main difference that I notice between the two is that the Juicy is much lighter.

Hope this helps.

Juicy Sport Update

We have recently been offering the Juicy Sport with a throttle-assist (since September 2009), but only through the shop in Buxton. Feedback has been good and we will be adding the bike to the website for wider availability soon.

14 AH batteries are on their way to the shop and, following testing, will be added to the Juicy Bike site as an optional upgrade.

Several customers have asked for the additional battery capacity and, whilst personally I think 10AH is ideal and having too many options simply increases both the "burden of choice" (21st Century consumer stress) and our own stock costs, when a local Police force requested 14AH, well, who are we to be so arrogant!

Benjy, JuicyBike:

Thanks (Benjy), but (JuicyBike) getting a bit confusing. Is the Juicy Bike sports available for sale to mail-order customers, or do we have to wait for it to be on the website? In the meantime, can mail-order customers order by phone instead? (Derby is a lovely place but a long way from us in the soft South).

How long before the 14Ah battery is available? If it's only weeks away, then it sounds as if it would be worth putting off ordering till it's on offer.

Which is the best way of communicating with you, by email or by messages on here?

Sorry to hassle you, but your products are getting popular!

Juicy Bike Purchase

Hi Ben Hi Allen
Juicy Bike is essentially local to hilly Buxton in Derbyshire. We have attempted to bring other retailers to our range, however our mark-up is relatively low compared to the main stream e-bikes, so retailers prefer the profits associated with sales of better known makes.

We do benefit in Buxton, from being a popular destination and many, many tourists try electric bikes for the first time when they come accross our shop eco republic

This often means that our customers try our e-bikes first, then do their comparison shopping when they get home and often finally purchase ours.

This develops a number of "clusters" of Juicy Bike owners around the country as friends and colleagues try our new owners' bikes.

It's very interesting to see the business develop in this way, but frustrating for potential customers that would like to try our bikes locally. It's difficult for us too, of course as no retailer likes to loose a sale!

We spend very little on advertising and marketing and prefer instead to keep our prices reasonable. And, we are determined to grow at a pace we can properly manage in terms of availability, but more importantly quality. Quality is our priority number 1, at the expense of growing more rapidly. We have learned this simple lesson!

As with everything that we develop, after the new 14AH Sport batteries arrive with us on 10th June we will be testing them thoroughly, selling locally first, then more widely after we are totally happy with the quality.

The 14AH battery will retail for £349 and the 14AH version of the Sport will be offered for £865 in our shop and (eventually) £845 on the web.

I hope this helps with any confusion. As for contacting us: during the day our shop phone is 01298 214040, and is well attended. The second best way is via email: uksales@juicybike.com

From time to time I do visit the Pedelecs Forums as there is so much useful info and wide experience here. But generally contact is better via email.

Best regards,
Bob Wales

Allen,

I believe that all of the options are available mail order....my interpretation of Bobs comments are that they are just not all listed on the website for sale online. I think if you call Bob he will be able to sell you the bike with throttle as you desire (and as I am also getting).

Thanks Ben.

I'll phone them, as you suggest, but I think I'll be waiting a month or so for the bigger battery to become available with the Sports. Must say I hadn't thought of the throttle as a problem, so it'll give me time to think a bit harder about any other potential holes in my reasoning!
