Another Newbie (in Herts) overwhelmed by choice of bike

My tale of woe began 3 months ago with a diagnosis of epilepsy meaning I can't drive for 12 months. We've sold the second car & whilst some might say the money's burning a hole in my pocket I still need to get to work which is 8-10 miles.

I can comfortably do this on my mountain bike but at the moment with the medication I'm taking leaving me tired - to attempt this journey 10 times a week is a bit much so I'm relying on erratic buses and my wife to drive me most days.

I've tried several of the top end bikes over the last month which are amazing but the cost still frightens me and wondered how people view the Wispa 905SE.

The route to work is a real selection box. Some road, some good tracks, some muddy rutted track & a couple of short as well as some long climbs. So I'm not sure how the heavier bikes would cope this.

I'd welcome anyone's experiences.

As you will already have gathered, there is a wide choice available.

Paul - in the same boat as you although I had a different set of criteria..

The one thing that everyone told me was to get out there and try as many bikes as possible. I would take John up on his offer try a couple. Use the links off the main page to find some other dealers and try their offerings as well.

Spend a day or two trolling through the forum, reading everything. When you think you have found a bike you like then search for it to see what problems others have had - it will help you make your mind up ;-)

Best of luck - I'm trying to do away with the 2nd car and I'm healthy (well, grossly overweight..hence why I want a bike that has assistance rather than an assisted bike) - I pick mine up in a week and am like a kid at Christmas.....

If your employer is part of the Cycleshceme, Bike4Work etc. you can get up to 40% off a new bike up to £1000 by paying before tax and NI at participating dealers.

The Wisper 905 is an excellent bike with many admirers on these forums. It will easily cope with your commute and the company has an excellent reputation for service through its dealers. The larger battery offered by Wisper is perhaps over-kill for your journey, but perhaps will provide better range for when you're not at work.
Wisper are also the leading light behind BEBA which should provide you the reassurance of an expected level of quality and service.
I sympathise strongly with your condition and wish you a speedy adjustment.

I am now a 'fully-fledged' member of the forum being the owner of a Wisper 905 SE City.

Bought and rode away on Saturday and collected got off the train early at Stevenage to allow me to do a 15-miler home.

I love it.

I do now need towork on my biceps because if anyone knows Stevenage station there are a lot of steps and no lift.

Congratulations Cardy,

I do know Stevenage station and it can be step free. There is a long ramp from the town centre side to the overbridge/booking hall and then lifts to both platforms. I used the lifts last time I was there with my bike - I think you have to ask the staff to use them.

If I’m travelling by rail with a heavy bike I usually check the station access on the National Rail website - I find their station plans very helpful. I often decide to ride a bit further, to a different station, to avoid a lot of steps.

Hi Cardy - great to see you got your bike. My wife's cousin had a similar experience to you, had to stay off driving due to illness and bought an e-bike. He let me try it last year and this is what got me into the e-bike game when I wrote off my scooter. I see you tried the Storck but decided on the Wisper, any particular reason since I also tried both but felt more comfortable with the Storck? Then again, I suppose I answered my own question.

Initially I fell in love with the Storck as it is a truly fantastic looking bike and an awesome ride but I've had a couple of "non-electric" rust-buckets stolen in my time and I guess insurance/security was always at the front of my mind in shelling out for my bike.

Add to that I've always been a Ford Escort/Ford Focus man and in keeping with my low-key lifestyle I decided my nerves wouldnt stand the outlay.
