Hi all

I am sitting in a&e after I got knocked off by a car turning left that did not indicate or see me (despite the yellow Fluro)

Bike seems fine other than scratches but clearly i do t know for sure . His near side front tire ran over my ankle and stopped on my toes. I ha to shout to get him to reverse off)

He stopped and helped me get up, was helpful as possible without actually admitting liability or fault. I also took his details

Is there anything I should be doing ? Other than getting leg and head checked out

Thanks
Kirstin

Sorry to hear that. I wish you a speedy recovery.
You're obliged to report the accident to the police and so is the driver. Failing to report an accident is a serious offence. Unless you've got something to hide, if you're involved in an accident where you're hurt, you should call the police at the time of the accident.
I hope you've got some independent witness details!

Sorry to hear that Kirsten, an independent Witness would be handy if there was one . That driver could wake up tomorrow with a nasty case of amnesia and forget everything . Get your digital camera busy and take pics of the bruises or injury , bike etc. and if you are fit , the location of the accident . Write it all down when it is fresh in your memory and draw a plan .Report it to the Police as suggested , after all you are hurt . Hope you aren`t in too much pain and make a full recovery .

Thanks all . Did not know it was a n offence, stupid - feel like I should know better. Have called police and all going in this afternoon

Nothing too bad in the end - just a little minor concussion, bit of a sprained/bruised ankle, some rather sore crushed toes and few minor bashes/cuts. Lucky really

Since my helmet took quite a bit of punishment the thread on cheap snowboard helmets is timely also.

All happened because the lock across the harbours was broken this morning and I was forced onto the main a259 to Brighton. I usually avoid like plague!

The police usually give the driver a rough time if he didn't report the accident.

My Brother-in-law got knocked off his motorbike, and some kind soul offered to take him to hospital. It was about twelve hours later when he came out patched up, so we went to the Police Station to report it. They immediately phoned the driver and demanded that she come immediately with the threat of prosecution for failing to report the accident. I think she said something like she could come later, whereupon the sergeant went nuts. She turned up about 10 minutes later bawling her eyes out, but that didn't work with the sergeant either.

The law requires that you report any accident involving injury immediately, or within 24 hours if not practical (because you're injured, etc).

My best advice: Unless you've got something to hide. If someone knocks you off your bike and something hurts, stay put, don't accept any offers of help to take you to hospital. Ring for an ambulance and the police. Let them do their thing.

Remember accidents involving a left turning driver are very serious mistakes and often result in death or serious injury. They should be dealt with properly with as much publicity as possible.

It's only an offence not to report if there's been an injury, otherwise swapping details is enough.

EDIT:

Doh, beaten by d8veh!

There's a good post on Bike Radar on what to do in the case of an accident:-

Do you have any British Cycling or CTC membership for insurance/legal cover purposes?

Oh, ouch.
Good luck with your recovery and if the driver didn't report that, hopefully the polis will rake him over the coals. As said, take pics; of the scene, your damage, your injuries (now, and also when the bruises come up - there's nothing quite as effective as a set of glossy blow-ups of horrible-looking bruises and scars), the moon, the trees, anything, really.

Glad to hear there's nothing too badly mangled, Kirstin:

Made my eyes water, just the same...

Oh, and while you're taking photos of the gory bits....

See if you can get a good shot of his tyre tread-marks on your ankle - might come in handy as evidence

Hello Kirstin, i am very very sorry to hear about your incident, after reading through the thread twice i clocked on that it was actually about you. I hope that you are not in a lot of pain, make sure that you eat on time so that you can take your medication right after. Kirstin, tell you what, this happens to cyclist on a daily basis.
Drivers must think very carefully at all times that cyclists are not made out of steel and also that we are more at risk by getting badly hurt. Do some drivers think that we are invisible or totally non-existent?
As far as I am concerned they are damn selfish or just do not care one bit. Sleep well and get plenty of rest and GOD BLESS XXXX. AND SORRY AGAIN:(
