Another accident in the news

That's our second British road death on these things, plus numerous injuries. I can't see any way they can mix safely with traffic on the road, nor mix safely with pedestrians on pavements.

The numbers - at least for deaths, about 1 a year - aren't big enough to draw any conclusions.

Using an e-scooter in Wolverhampton which is not an official trial area.

Any owned e-scooter is currently illegal anywhere in public, since only the officially approved rental scooters can be used and those only in the trial areas.

Since they are legally a form of motor vehicle which is not permitted outside of the trial and under trial conditions, it was being driven without registration or valid third party insurance which all motor vehicles are required to have.

There could be other breaches as well, since any motor vehicle driver requires a current driving licence with all the conditions applying to that.

That's a bit of an assumption to make in that a helmet only offers limited protection (once the lining is compressed) up to something like a 12mph impact - after that you're wearing a solid lump (larger in circumference than your head which may in itsself be a problem - but that debate is not for here).

Given that the individual subsequently died of multiple injuries, whether of not he was wearing a helmet is sadly irrelavent.
