An Idiots Guide

Not wishing to upset, insult or patronise anyone, it occurs to me that many of us have little or no knowledge about how bicycles actually function or how to carry out what are to some, simple repairs and adjustments:confused:

The little knowledge and skills I posses in this realm have been gained by just having a go, sometimes getting it right, sometimes getting it totally wrong and more often than not doing things the hard way. The 'suck it and see' approach I suppose you might call it:eek:

On the other hand we have amongst us a core of experts who are daunted by nothing and able to perform what they would consider basic tasks blindfold.

What I propose is a How To Do It along with a How It Works section on the forum dedicated to helping people perform basic and not so basic tasks, e.g. how to repair a puncture, how to adjust brakes, how do gears work, etc, etc.
Tasks which require a small amount of manual dexterity and a few basic tools, but could save costly trips to a cycle shop:eek:

I made an attempt at explaining how to remove a rear wheel from an Agattu in a post on another thread, but am no expert, whereas many of you out there could have done a much better job I am sure.

Over to you guys and gals

John:)

Good idea John, especially the "How to do" section, since I've many times typed out things like wheel removal, chain adjustment, brake adjustment and the like, just as you have. It would be good to have a "one time" referral section.

In fact your Agattu wheel removal was a concise description that could be moved into such a section.

I thought you might agree Flecc, it could save you and the other experts having to continually repeat the same instructions, just point people to the relevant section. Obviously, the section could be edited and updated.
If there is general agreement maybe Russ could set this up?

Musicbooks,

People of all backgrounds, knowledge and skills use the forum. I would not suggest for a minute that the 'boffins' amongst us should dumb down their contributions. They would very quickly get bored.
By the same token, I would not wish to judge people ignorant or stupid because they don't know how to pump up a tyre or adjust a saddle, no body was born with those skills, although I can think of one possible exception;)

I think it is a great idea John, I would welcome it. I have learnt so much from this forum and have spent much time rummaging around looking for info that I know I have seen in the past. you have got my vote.
