F9 action cam

Yes John, wind noise is a problem with all action cams, including the most expensive models. This is usually suppressed or removed during editing...stick a bit of tape over the microphone hole. ;)

In the video below, the guy has mounted the F9 directly onto his bike frame, which I suspect is unsprung and the tyres inflated very hard...he's doing the camera no favours as can be seen. However, every time the bike stops, the actual video quality can be seen to be reasonably good.

I am currently rigging a full air suspension AVE XH-7 with six cameras. Unfortunately, I'm a bit short of play-time at the moment, so it may not be until after Christmas when I start recording a ride.

Note: The camera was recording at 720p, not the maximum 1080 it is capable of.

I've tried quite a lot of cheap action cameras and never been happy with any of them. I'm trying to talk my girlfriend into a Drift HD Ghost-S for christmas though. ;)

I may be pickier about image quality than most people, having spent 14 years as a photographer.
Street - Don't know if you've seen it, but I came accross a couple of reviews that said, although a lovely piece of kit, the Ghost 2 still doesn't match the Go-pro for image quality.

I was thinking to raid the piggybank for something really good, but I'd probably smash it on one of my forays into the ditch :p

I think perhaps you mean the Ghost, the Ghost S only arrived in the first people's hands last week, and there are not any full reviews of it yet. However going off the first few videos appearing on it, it looks every bit as good as the Hero3+, perhaps even a touch better:

However, even if it wasn't as good on image quality, it would still be my preference as the GoPro looks ridiculous, has no screen (ok, there is a screen accessory), does not mount well to the side of helmets, has a terrible battery life, doesnt have as easy to use a remote and is only waterproof in a silly plastic case that block out the sound as well as water.

Oooh dear.

To start with, no camera can be judged by watching Youtube, which down-grades all uploaded footage to 720p 30fps. I have noticed an increase in the amount uploads which play at a true 1080 HD. This involves uploading in a particular format that ensures full HD play-back on Youtube. Such formats can only be created by using a video converter such as Wondershare Ultimate and similar. I am currently researching this area videography.

I would like to clarify a few points regarding the GoPro Hero3. The Hero3 and Hero3+ have in-built WiFi capability. When aligning my own Hero3, I connect to the camera with my Hudl Android tablet, I can see exactly what the camera is viewing. Smart-phone users can also control all functions of the Gopro Hero3 through it's Wifi connection.

Cameras' fitted with a waterproof housing are designed for use in both surface water-sports and underwater use. If the full use of the microphone for on-the-fly narration is required, the Gopro should be mounted in an inexpensive open frame mount. The latest Hero3+ has a much larger battery, but is 30% smaller in overall dimensions. I agree, the Gopro is not the best camera for side-of-the-helmet mounting. BMX and dirt-bike stunt riders usually mount them on the top of the helmet just aft of the peak.

My own experience with the Drift camera is not good, I dislike the way it insists on smearing colours, which is not apparent in footage from my Veho Muvi HD 10, or my Gopro Hero3. Hopefully, the Drift guys have finally nailed this habit of smearing with the Ghost S. Unfortunately, the rider in the video appears to suffer from some sort of nervous "tick". One would think he would try to stop waggling his head from side to side, especially as this is one of the first video reviews of the new Ghost S....and he clearly hasn't discovered how to upload in the correct format for assured full 1080 HD replay. ;)

Blew it mentioned wind noise being a problem on ride videos; and it certainly is...

But I have another reson for needing to edit my soundtracks - I'm an inveterate sniffer: When I'm riding in chilly weather the ambient sound is constantly overdubbed with sniffs

No, but having followed this thread, I was impressed by the review for it on Techmoan. I don't want to spend a fortune, but am tempted to try this:)

Actually, looking closer, this one seems to match the specification given in the review better than the one you have linked to? It's a minefield out there:eek:
Hi Phil,

The quality seems good for the money, but helmet and bike mounting are less than ideal:(

I suppose that's another way to keep the costs down. Invariably find a bit of tinkering is needed anyway with this type of thing:eek:

True but thought I would throw another name in which people may not have heard of :p always better to be reasonable on gift suggestions! They have different models but the cheapest is still around £125 which is a large amount as gift request.
