Advice needed on wiring lights

So I've recently jumped into Ebikes and got a Furo X Max, and I'm very happy with it

However, I was learning all the functions of the controller that's fitted on this bike (CURTIS KD21C) and I've found that holding + on the controller switches on the screen backlight, but also is designed to allow you to switch on lights.

Now my bike doesn't have any wired in lights, it just uses a AA front light, but I'm thinking it *should* be relatively straight forward to add a front (and rear?) light into the mix.

As it's a new bike I'd prefer not to invalidate my warranty by stripping down wires, but there is a Julet green type connector (5 pin) that is easily accessible and connects all the electrics to the controller.

Is it possible to find a light whose cable will just plug in between the male/female of this connector? Or am I looking at something more involved?

As you can probably tell I am totally new to all of this, so any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Tom

The simple answer is no.

There is no switched wire for the lights in there. The LCD communicates with the motor controller using two of those wires. If the controller has the connector for lights, the software and the switching transistor, the controller will power the lights connector when the LCD backlight is on.

Even if you have the connector there and it works, the power provided is often low and only suitable for crappy lights. If you overload it, you blow the transistor and the lights then stay on all the time.

IMHO, it's better to wire lights directly to the battery, so you can have as much power as you want, or you can use a separate rechargeable power pack.

Hah, thanks for the quick answer!

I had a nasty feeling that might be the case. To be honest I’ve already invested in a couple of rechargeable lights that I’m pretty happy with. But I quite like the idea of having *some* light come on when I switch on the backlight.

Maybe I'll take the controller off next and take a look to see if I have any other connection on it....

The simple answer is no.

If you want fixed lights working off battery power then simply wire then in parallel via the controller /battery supply wires add a fuse inline and a switch.
