Hi All,

Here on this site we own and ride our bikes for various reasons, quite a few to name, wheather it is due to having fun,a hobby, riding to work or even down to a physical problem we are still proud of owning one.

On the flip side of things where would you categorise yourself in terms of being addicted to your bike or bikes, that's in a positive way guys? For example do you enjoy keeping your bike clean after every ride,do you like to ride on a daily basis,do you like the fact that people look at you whenever you pass them by,do you enjoy adding or modifying your bike or even rushing to get home quickly, because of the beautiful sunshine.

The list can go on and on, if i was to categorise myself between 1-10 and 10 being highly addicted, i would say 8,because i enjoy riding and cleaning my bike on a very regular basis, and also making sure that every part of the bike is functionally working at it's best.

So,how would you all rate yourself, this could just mean something major or minor?

I was quite addicted to cycling at one time, covering very large annual mileages both summer and winter. However, as age increased and suffering more from winter cold that aspect faded. Then adopting e-bikes from the age of 67, partly at first but gradually increasing reduced the keenness slightly more year round since it reduced some of the physical challenge and pleasure.

Now at 77 years and after more than a year of really bad weather my e-cycling is at a very low ebb and figures very little in my life as an activity. However, there are other factors at play in this, including being fully occupied in other activities restricting my time.

Interesting discussion..

I think electric bikes naturally appeal to hobbyist types and those who love their technology gadgets (I'm an addict when I come to gadget). Plenty of people do like to accessorise their bikes on here and add more technology, especially if it mean building or adapting things that don't already exist. Part of the fun of that that is in the challenge and thinking up new ways of adding more functionality to the bike, coming up with new ideas and ways of thinking about how e-bikes might work better. I'm one of those types definitely. I see electric bikes as progressive and a hobby in itself, as well as just a practical means of transport. It's amazing how much you can learn on here, and I love learning stuff from fellow enthusiasts and watching other peoples builds and projects.

Once you build one bike it's definitely addictive and hard to stop (for me anyway). I can see why some people here end up building or buying 3 or 4 bikes! I couldn't understand that when I first came here, and thought surely that's just excessive, how many bikes do you need?! But now I understand it.. just like with bicycles people have bikes for different uses, road bikes for touring, folding bikes for portability etc.. with electric bikes you might have ones for speed and power, or ones for lightweight, or just because you like the motor drive system or technology on it.

I don't often clean my bike and hate cleaning things in general! It's quite difficult though living in a 2nd floor flat. I don't have a lot of room for cleaning a bike properly and so have to use the stairway area if they get really muddy and time it when everyone is out at work to avoid getting in peoples way and making a mess. If I lived in a ground floor property (which I plan to soon) I will be cleaning it more regularly definitely :D I'm lucky though that my bike rarely gets ridden in rain and so stays looking clean. In fact, people have commented on here how immaculate my 26" looked when I posted up pics and asked whether I even ride it lol, even after 200 miles on the clock.

I'm quite proud of my bikes and like showing them off and people looking at them..but at the same time, I sometimes feel guilty when I overtake people struggling up hills and so I often will try to hide the fact I'm riding electric and stay behind them until they clear the hill, as I don't want to look like I'm showing off!

I guess an electric bike can also be seen as status symbol in a way due to their perceived high value and luxury status to some extent..you feel like you're part of an exclusive club still in a way as bikes are very rare to see in my town at least. It's also a talking point and something some owners are proud to show off and talk about to people interested. When I go to the sorting office I get interest from the postal workers there.

Maybe if there isn't already one, we'll have an e-bike members club at some point with meetings in regional areas and annual national meet ups.. but do we really need one when this forum is pretty much like that.. one big community of friends with shared interests :) Perhaps we'll see clubs emerge for enthusiasts for specific brands and models of bike in the future..like you have with cars.. I know the Cyclamatic has a lot of followers and there's a lot of threads about customising them.

Even during those cold winter nights?I am sure that a battery prefers to be warm rather than being too hot or being too cold, what do you reckon in terms of it's life expectancy?

Depending on the state of charge, storing at 25c means you could permanently lose 20% of the capacity of the battery in one year versus 2% stored @ 0c.

How to Store Batteries – Battery University

However, if you use batteries whilst they are @ 0c, then they have a reduced capacity and have a higher voltage drop. However, the effect isn't permanent and capacity will return once the temp rises again (that's why ebikes often feel slower during the winter - perversely though as motors are more efficient the colder they are).

About cooling the motors?

On ES, folks have heaters for the batteries, oil cooling for the motors and water cooling for the controllers.

Serious stuff.

But have you seen the video of Dr Bass starting his car with 4 A123's and its in snow at -12, that really shows what our batteries can do if need be

Excuse me guys, but i am still thinking up a come back question in response to the answer that amigafan2003 had left sometime earlier today.

I really hope this is not the case. Personally, I'd be happy if both myself and e-bike were completely invisible when out and about.

These days I ride, mostly alone to get away from it all. Just want to spend time with my own thoughts.

Thats not to say that I would not like to meet other e-bikers at a meet to chat about the subject. Like minded talk is always nice.

Summer 8/10
Winter 6/10

Cleaning, don't care as long as bike is running sweet.

Like flecc I started with ebikes when I was 67, now 69 and doing about 1500 miles a year summer and winter I think you could say I was fairly obsessed! The idea was to cut down on car usage and it's certainly done that as until recently I only used it for journeys I would have done in the car. Now however my wife has become electrified so occasionally we go on a leisure ride.

I've got a good maintenance area in the garage with a bike stand as I enjoy fiddling with the bikes and keeping them clean.

At the moment I enjoy the extra challenge in winter but whether that will continue much longer I will have to wait and see as I suppose age is a factor!

So I suppose 8/10 all year round.

I guess I would be a 9 out of 10 in summer, and a 7 in winter. I ride at least once a week unless the weather is exceptionally bad, which has certainly been the case of late. Mostly, I set off for a good few hours and ride at least 25 miles, and often more.

All my fun activities are dependent on good weather to some extent, and thus three hobbies compete for the sunny periods. In summer I will endeavor to do all three in one day. Ride the motorcycle to the airfield, go flying, motorcycle back home via the long route, then ebike to the pub, a 4 mile trip each way which is often extended to 20 miles or more. That's the perfect day for me.

I used to go off road mountain biking a great deal, but a nasty crash on a downhill section in Friston Forest some years back put a stop to all my cycling due to knee ligament damage, until I discovered Ebikes. I do enjoy ebiking enormously. There is a serene contentment in just cruising along with just a little exercise going on, and the activity has had miraculous effects on my damaged knee.

I am fastidious about keeping the bike clean and well maintained, but I'm like that with all my activities, as in the case of flying and motorcycling my life depends on it, but it is a task I enjoy although I don't feel any urges to modify my ebike, I just like riding it. If only it was warm dry and sunny again!!!
