I said it. What I mean is that the bikes you tried both come with very rudimentary pedal assist algorithms. You're trying to judge all bikes with cadence sensors on that basis, and by the sounds of it, without attempting to adjust them.

What a lot of people don't realise is that many such bikes and others at the cheap end of the scale that have LCDs, actually have parameters in the settings that allow you to tune out the characteristics that you don't like. In fact, it's rare that even the retailer knows about the settings.

My background is as an engineer fault-finding down to component level. I went back to 3 years full-time learning computer systems and networking at the West Coast College of Tafe when I was 50 years old, one of 12 who graduated out of 125. I know hardware and software too.

Then did you figure out how to adjust the Freego and Sunbear settings?

How come with all that knowledge and experience, you don't help all the guys that come on the forum with electrical problems. It's nearly always left to me and Neal.

I can't remember now, it's been 3-4 years since the Sunbear and 2 1/2 since the Freego. Blimey, I have trouble remembering what I had for dinner last night let alone what adjustments I made to a piece of software 4 years ago!

I've not been on here for over a year due to family issues. I do try and assist wherever I can, but my bicycle knowledge is rudimentary to say the least.

My main earner while in Australia was the installation and repair of large-scale video projector systems, video walls and large-scale PA systems in theatres, stadia, nightclubs and casinos all over Western and South Australia as well as home theatre installations for the well-heeled.

The battery technology is evolving so rapidly I have trouble keeping up with all the latest information, I don't feel comfortable with imparting my pearls of (wisdom) in case I steer somebody wrongly due to my not keeping up with the latest. If there is a technical issue involving pure fault-finding techniques then I'm your man and glad to assist.

• If the Freego and Sunbear controller systems are/were like the Pendleton Somerby ebike I bought (speed control), then indeed the ride experience could well have been cr*p (a subjective term ).
• Fortunately I'd ridden other ebikes and knew that that ride experience could be improved on and thanks to posting on this forum I changed the system to a KT Torque Simulation Controller (and display) and the ride experience was transformer.
• I have also ridden a torque sensing ebike too, but to be fair, not for many miles, but at first measure, the ride experience (from the motor assist point of view) seemed much the same - enough that I'd not consider a torque sensing system (too many complications it seems, more costly and the knowledge to system fault find/repair is not so abundant.).
• But each to their own of course.
